      It's been a while since I posted about OpenStudio here. It started as a SketchUp plugin to create, edit and simulate EnergyPlus IDF files. It has expanded into a full SDK and application suite, which also still does include a SketchUp plugin. The program and the plugin work with an OpenStudio model file (OSM) vs. a SketchUp File. In addition to running energy simulations it can also run Radiance simulations, and support for other engines is being developed. There is also a gbXML import and a basic gbXML export.

      It is a C++ application with ruby bindings. We can access the ruby bindings from a standard ruby console or from within SketchUp. It is open source and cross platform. Below is a link to our website, and a playlist on YouTube that goes through the entire workflow (the 2nd and 3rd videos focus on the SketchUp plugin). The plugin is used to define the building envelope and to define what type of activity occurs in the spaces. The stand alone OpenStudio application allows you to associate weather files with the model, add schedules, loads such as people, lights, etc. It also allows you to define the mechanical system. You do have to work within a structured workflow in SketchUp. Geometry has to be contained within a SketchUp group defined as an OpenStudio space.

        Sounds promising. Is this limited to the PC format only?

            All of OpenStudio works on Mac, Windows, and Linux, except off course there is no Linux SketchUp plugin. Linux was important for OpenStudio to take advantage of super computers and cloud computing for optimizations and parametric analysis. A single simulation takes just a few minutes, and you can run as many at a time as your have cores on your machine, but If you want to run a few thousand simulations you probably I don't want to use your machine. Of course that scale is more researcher vs, practitioner. A parametric GUI is tue in 3-6 months.
