Making an compenent cut into a wall
-
I know there are a lot of threads about this but i have spent the lat couple of hours reading about this and all other threads seem to be more complex. I want to make door/window components that automatically cut a hole in the wall they are put in.
I have created a 2d wall with a 2d rectangle for a window. Selected all 4 sides and the face which then allows me to select the cut opening in the create component window. If i make the component tanslucent then i can see that this has cut a hole in the 2d wall. The problem is when i make it 3D. This method means that the back face of the wall is not cut and therefore you can not see through the window. How do i do this?
thanks -
Hi Browfish,
A component can only cut a single face unfortunately. It has one gluing plane (since it has only one co-ordinate system and the gluing plane is always the red/green plane) and it can only cut on that plane.
Now of course there are tricks. Like placing another component inside. Here is a tutorial on it:

That's what I linked above. Good plugin.
And how about this one?

This Plug by TIG don't works for you ?
Seems that can't be more simple?[flash=560,315:2f7hcgbf]http://www.youtube.com/v/G_5yc1-Hqo8[/flash:2f7hcgbf]

Thanks
The method of making 2 components each cut into each side of the wall works and they can be moved together, however you can not copy them as a pair, i only get one face for the second window.
I have tried combining both compenents into a larger component but this just loses the ability to cut the wall. Is there another trick or do i really need to get a plugin.
thanks again -
Read that tutorial again. If you combine them into a new, upper level component and also set a gluing/cutting plane for this, you can handle the two together, insert them etc. from the component browser and explode them at the end (so there are two, opposite ones now on the opposite faces - do not explode these).
Here is an example model. http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=a7960f12cf33423c9c6e1dd67923b5cd
