My select tool does not show a box around the object that I am trying to select. Is there a way to enable this?

Do you mean the blue box that surrounds a collection of edges and faces? That would be a collection assigned as a group or component. A single selected object will be highlighted in blue, but not a box around it. Also, if you wished to make a single item a group or component you will have to go to Menu>Edit>MakeGroup, or MakeComponent. A selection of more than one item, you can right click and invoke group or component in the context menu.
To unselect anything hit Control T.

The box that I'm referring to is a light box the indicates the area around the item before the blue box shows. I use the same version at work and it has this feature but it doesn't show up on the one I use at home.
It is difficult to see what I am picking to make into a component without the box.(unsure what it is really called)

          Thanks,

          Jerry

What happens if you disable hardware acceleration under Window > Preferences > OpenGL?

              Thanks Gaielus,
That did it. I works now.

Don't be glad yet. This will slow down SketchUp. What graphic card do you have?

So, is it the selection tool's selection box, or crossing window that we are talking about here?

                    Gaieus,
My graphic is an Intergreated Intel GMA HD card.
Does this tell you anything? Means nothing to me.LOL

Well, it means that it's not a dedicated card and you will probably need to live with hardware acceleration turned off. In more complex models (especially with big image based materials and shadows turned on), SU can be slower. But at least works properly.

I do not know how the drivers of these integrated chipsets are updated (or if they can at all) but if you can, you can try to update it and try with HW acceleration on again.
