Working with laser-scanned data

I've just had some very large building interiors surveyed by laser-scanning (I require pin-point accuracy on this project) and the surveyors have handed me tens of gigs of data in .pts format. I've been looking at various ways of processing this data, ultimately into a 3D model form I can work from. The latest versions of Autocad (pardon me) can process it effectively with some additional free 'application' software, but after a few years as a SketchUp convert, I bang my head on the desk every time I enter Autocad world!
I have found a plugin for SketchUp from Pointools which can process .pts data into 'pod' form, which SketchUp can then display as a point cloud. That's great, although it comes at a cost of £850 and from what I can make out in a limited evaluation period, I then have to form a model within the point-cloud and snap faces etc. to the cloud-points. Sounds simple enough...for a simple model, but for a vast and intricate interior it's the biggest most boring 3D dot to dot exercise ever!....I'm heading back to Autocad, frustrated, but I thought it was maybe worth asking the forum if anyone knows cheaper, quicker and more effective ways of working with point clouds in SketchUp?

I am not sure these will do exactly what you want but, click on the red button at the top called Plugins Index. Look up TIG s list of plugins. Also, look up kirill2008's plugins. Seek by using Edit>Find keyword "points", or "CSV". Maybe one of these tools can work.

Thank you. The kirril2008 tool for creating a mesh to points looks interesting, although I'm unsure that a point cloud point is a 'point'...I'll have a go. Certainly a few things worth trying among your suggestions. Thanks for the 'pointer'!
