Line selections turn off when push pull selected

Hi - another newb here - my first foray into CAD of any kind - considerable experience drafting in the oil patch back in the day, but none in CAD so decided to try SU. My question: when following the tutorial, and doing the house dwg with the roof lines selected, and highlighted blue, the lines "deselect" whenever I click on the push pull icon to create the roof pitch. Do I have a setting wrong?

Can you specify which tutorial ?
BTW, if I remember this video, the demonstrator was using the Move tool which is next to the Push/Pull Tool
Also, you are writing about lines deselecting. The Push/Pull tool deselect lines since it works on faces.
Just ideas.
