Want to create 3-D icons. Is this the right tool?
-
Hi all,
I am looking for a tool to create 3-D icons. Is SketchUp the right tool for this? Seems to me that SketchUp is optimized for architecture. I am comparing this with GIMP.
TIA

Sure, you can use Sketchup to create icons, in fact all of the tool icons that come with Sketchup are created in 3D in Sketchup. You'll probably want to use a rendering program to add lighting effects and shininess, as that is something Sketchup cannot do.

Thanks!
I have been trying to find a tutorial on using Sketchup to create icons.
Can you point me to one?
TIA

Hi Avraham, hi folks.
SketchUp (SU) is a 3D modeling tool. Once you learn how to draw something with it, you can apply your knowledge on how to draw a specific item, be it a house, a boat, an airplane, a watch or whatever object that will be used as an icon.
Once the object is done in 3D, you can axport a 2D view of the object with a perspective effect, with shadow, etc. The exported file can be a JPG, for example, that can then be used as an image like an icon.
Then, to answer your question, you must first learn how to use SU. There are many video tutorials on SU's web site and on youtube, just to name these sites. Take the time to read the help about all the subjects that interest you.
Just ideas.

You have also a very funny programme for draw in color in 3D Axo/isometric!

Avraham, here is a link with more info about the Sketchup icons. Its not really a tutorial but it might help you. Like Jean says, its mostly about learning to draw with Sketchup.

Naturally, you can create 3D with SketchUp...and then use rendering software to produce a photoreal effect or add reflective and lighting effects. Personally however, if I was considering software simply to produce 3D icons, I'd probably use RealDraw. It's vector based, just like SU...but it's much easier to produce a wide range of graphic effects right out of the box.
