New Nvidia driver issue w/285.62
-
It must be a buggy driver version...
You could try if turning off Fast Feedback (from the SU OpenGL preferences) and restarting SU would help. The option used to work for some old cards (like the old ATI on my previous computer) but I think someone recently claimed it helped with his Nvidia card.Anssi

Turning off fast feedback or OpenGl acceleration both fix the issue but render the system worthless. I've been in touch with Nvidia and my computer manufacturer. Both say the new driver must be buggy with OpenGL. Two things they suggested; Firstly, Nvidia said that they would be bringing out a new driver in a couple weeks. My manufacturer (In my case Sager) said to download drivers for the 485M SLI card that they have on their site. I'm in the process of doing that now. I tried Nvidias drivers for the 485M and still no luck (faster download). Maybe the OEM drivers will be better. At 41kb a second it will be a while before I can try them. Did you guys all buy BF3 or Batman? those two love the new driver. EA said it was required although Its not. Admittedly the performance in BF3 was much improved. Sadly work is more important and OpenGL rules when it comes down to it. I thought it might be the "Air Display" driver for wifi ipad multi-display, it wasnt that. Its driving me crazy. The good news is I was definitive about Sketchup being rock solid, the issue is firmly in the hands of Nvidia and they agreed. Hopefully everyone will send Nvidia a note about the OpenGL issues, we can onlyhope this gets fixed soon.
BTW, not to be a jerk but I'm happy I'm not alone. I thought I might be at the mercy of Nvidia all by myself. I imagine the issue must be happening to many who use OpenGL.
FYI, I also tried disabling and uninstalling 3D vision, that didnt work either.

Thanks for the info Stevo! I'll also drop a line to Nvidia. I tried BF3 but I don't think I'll buy it, even if I'm quite a fan of DICE -- it's a while I get deluded by much hyped titles that are turning to be average or less than average (Dead Island, Rage, Crysis 2, BF3 etc). Crysis 2 did impress me on the technological side after the DX11 Ultra patch, though!
Let's hope Nvidia will fix the issue fast, I'll have to work a lot with SketchUp in next weeks and having no shadows is quite bothering; I think your bug is much worst though, so you do fine trying older drivers!

I agree on the game thing. I just need a game or two on my Laptop, otherwise I'm on a PS3 or another Desktop that suits gaming better. No shadows is unnaceptable, are going to revert back to an older driver?. Are you guys using a mobil GPU like the 460M or are you all on desktops?

I had the same issue when I installed my new GTX 560, I unticked both fast feedback and hardware acceleration in open gl. When I restarted the problem had gone away, but as you say this defeats the purpose of a good card.
However, I then re-enabled both fast feedback and hardware acceleration and restarted SU and the problem was still gone, and hasn't returned since. And it may be interesting to note that SU8 had this problem while SU7 functioned perfectly.

I think I'll try to work like that, with no shadows, hoping Nvidia will put out at least a fixed beta driver soon! I'm rendering in Octane so I can study shadows there almost in real time. I love that renderer so much.
By the way, I'm on desktop (my main machine specs are in my sig).

Hi, guys. I have the same issue as all of you described. I have contacted Nvidia and they took me through a painful driver reinstall in a Safe Mode for a few times. I tried all different drivers and even restored my PC to an earlier point (also recommended by them). Eventually when everything failed they told me it is not the card that is giving me problem.
At the same time if you read posts on SketchUp they say it is the graphics card and there is an issue with OpenGL.I personally think there is something wrong with both parties and no one wants to take the responsibility. The problem is really, really annoying!
My system is: Intel(R)Xeon 8 core processor, 8 Gb Ram, Nvidia GTX 560 (one month old); Windows 7/32, SketchUp 8 Pro
If anyone has any solution besides reinstalling the drivers, switching off the Hardware acceleration or Fast feedback please share it as this may save a few lives out there.

To come back to my earlier post, has anyone tried switching ONLY Fast Feedback off, as I suggested. It once helped me with mouse trails on an old card, and I didn't notice any slowdown in performance. I know very well what turning off Hardware Acceleration does to performance, so, of course, finding a driver version that works is the best solution.

and for that matter, my post where I said to turn them both off then back on again.

Yes, I tried the suggestion of switching the functions on and off. It worked for one SU session but the issue appeared once again when the SU was restarted once again for the next session.

Someone raised the same topic on SU forum: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sketchup/thread?fid=0d4a1a86e86a966b0004b0751abb058b&hl=en and those interested are invited to have a look.

I am having similar Nvidia driver issues. 285.62 on SLI GTX 580's. SU works fine (but slooow) with hardware acceleration, Fast Feedback unchecked. As soon it is switched back on SU freezes (entire computer) within one or two minutes. I have even tried setting up a custom program control in Nvidia's control panel under 3D settings, adding Sketchup to the programs list and customizing based on other users successful use of Quatro settings. NO LUCK. It is my understanding that Nvidia, at least at one time had been certified for use with Sketchup?
Aside from waiting for a new driver, any suggestions?
