Advice on post production ?
-
Hi all attempt 6 to do this lol, keeping it short in case of fail again, picture drawn in Sketchup ( love this program ), am very new to 3d computer drawing but wish I started this years ago. I have been advised to look into post production enhancing my pictures ( confused me when told )any advice to links, video links ( i learn better by watching lol )would be greatly appreciated but not expected if everyone is busy, hope you like this picture, I would like to show more but am having trouble doing this for some reason, cheers and thanks,

Hi !
Post-production is all on adding effects in your pictures, in order to make them "alive" ...
Your picture here is really nice, but looks like a copy-paste ... Add a little blurring and wave distortion on its rear ... and some cloud blurring on its bottom and it will already look like a flying spaceship ...
Depending on the post-processing software you use, you may find many tutorials websites for those effects ... -
Thanks Stil Teg, yes I see what you mean, I think I found a site that has some good tuts on photo shop so will need to spend some time checking it out. Hopefully I will learn enough to be able to confidently enhance my images to a more better quality and feel, thanks again for responding, appreciated, cheers

The first step would be making sure you render an "alpha" pass or render it with a transparent background, so you can isolate the ship from the background. This will help you add the motion blur and other effects. I also think rendering this with Image Based Lighting via an .hdr or .exr will do wonders to make it seem more realistic and better integrated into the scene. Other than that and it's a pretty cool model. Good work, keep it up.

You wanna make it 'POP'?
Firstly, what is it?
The reason I ask is you have it flying yet it has no wings, so to me it looks like something that needs to either be in space or under water.
Next I'd relook at materials, the gun contraption in front looks brand spanking new, no wear from heat, so maybe a less shiny texture, the other parts (black) looks like plastic. How about adding some dirt?
I'd also suggest rendering using IBL (image based lighting) and that same image could serve as your background.
As far as post production goes, that's up to you, IMO a great render never needs post work, however if it's to add effects then by all means.

A few more comments
It feels like a lego toy dangling from a string, then a sky background put behind it. so that's GREAT, if you're trying to model how fun a lego toy can be. But to make it look more real, you need to think like it. Like Solo suggested, it has no wings. ok, so how does it fly? Maybe with some awesome rocket burners in the back. So it needs great glowing fire spitting out the back, or something. Blue fire with ripples or something. Something that puts the thing moving forward.
Another one would be the antenna on top. Its razor thin but somehow standing perfectly upright. It should bent backwards in the wind.
More glowing effects on the front guns could be good too. Make them look like they are loaded and ready to go.
The sky might lack emotion. That can be ok, but again it sort of plays into the happy lego children's toy vibe.
The headlights might need some extra glow and atmosphere particles to help them standout. You might think about making it so you can lightly see the head-beams shooting off into the air in front of the vehicle.
ok, that's all I got for now at least (procrastinating real work at the moment )

Hi all, cheers and many thanks for your replies. I suppose I did not add too much info on what the picture was lol, what is it ?, ahh its a fantasy vehicle flying on patrol, no wings required as the 2 side pods are anti grav engines, kinda like the ones seen in star trek (yep that old chestnut ). I had no intentions on it looking like a lego toy but interesting view to consider and improve upon lol. When I rendered it in Kerkythea I just used the available materials, so yes It does look a whole lot shiny and too new, I hope I can age it a little without doing any damage to the picture, I tried photo shop (very new to that as well)to make some exhaust flare and lighting, results were less than desired lol, if I manage to get something decent completed I hope to submitt it again for feedback.
I think baby steps are the way to go for me, I just discovered Sketchup and the wondeful world of 3d drawing April this year, very nooobish, so until I have something more decent to show, I wont stalk anymore, thanks heaps for your advice, this forum is fantastic.
Oh Solo, I checked out you site, the Nagrall recorder is ... well... simply wondeful mate, if you did that in Sketchup and just rendered it, no other post production, that is where I want to be one day.
Cheers all Ray

For a vehicle that advanced you might want to get rid of the old school weaponry and move on to some state-of-the-art beam energy hardware.
