Bending a Helix
-
Hi all,
Basically what I need to do is apply a "vine" or helix to a curved cylinder. Almost like a vine wrapping around a bending branch. I can manage to make the curving cylinder fine, but creating the helix or vine that wraps around it seems to be an issue.

Hi Omie and welcome!
Would it be a kin of "double helix" (like in the picture; separating the cylined into two stripes) or just simply a single helix wrapped around the bent cylinder?
What tool did you use to "bend" that cylinder?
-
Hi Gaieus, thanks
It would have to be a single helix wrapped around the bent cylinder, so basically the geometric curve radius of the initial cylinder and the helix would be different (if you know what i mean). I simply just drew an arc and used the follow me tool to create the bend in the cylinder

Well, this was done differently. I used two plugins:
- Drawhelix - with which I drew a helix and then added a cylinder along
- and FredoScale - with which I bent the cylinder afterwards (other plugins like ShapeBender could also be used)
I would generally not start suggesting plugins in this section of the forums but in this case, drawing a helix around an already curved cylinder would be a pain in the butt.
Have you used any plugins yet?

Ahh okay, well draw helix comes in handy, and i tried to use shape bender but for some reason i keep ending up with deformed shapes.. ill give fredoscale a go and let you know how it turns out. thanks

I am not exactly sure what's going on there but from the screenshot it seems that you are not bending your shape along the red axis. Please, watch Chris's video and make sure that initially you place the tube along the red axis. The plugin only works this way.

I would reverse the back face of that bluish tube however.
