GoDaddy.com Elephant Shooting
-
by now I'm sure you've heard about the GoDaddy.com CEO shooting the Elephant in Africa. do you use Godaddy.com? will you be boycotting them? what are your thoughts on the matter?
-
As long as he wasn't poaching, I'm fine with it.
-
I respectfully disagree. Killing animals for pleasure is wrong.
-
actually it wasn't for pleasure. if you read up, they have to kill a male bull every so often to drive away a herd from an area. a herd can cause huge damage to an area of crops or a village. so, they choose an old bull to take out to minimise impact on the herd in general. (they've tried other methods, but unfortunately, this is the best method). the elephant does not go to waste and is used to feed villages in the area that would otherwise be starving.
the objectionable part is, this moron videoing it and then posting it. it's one of those things that should be done and not glorified.
-
I already boycott them (for my personal domains) due to other issues, I have not yet heard about this beyond this thread though. I'll have to look into it.
-
I am not against hunting, but I am against any form of trophy hunting. As long as the animal is eaten and used to the best extent of the hunter, great; but if killing or maiming an animal for just one part - fins in soup, head on the wall, fur on the floor, etc... Is strictly vanity and IMO inexcusable. Even if this animal was shot to displace a a herd and it fed a hundred villagers, the posting of the video made it a trophy hunt IMO.
-
Guys, I am against hunting in any form unless it's for survival.
However...
I lived in South Africa for almost 30 years and do remember Culling was needed especially on old Elephant bulls as they strip the trees and over eat as well as tilt the eco balance the parks/reserves try to maintain. So instead of just having a ranger kill them they invite Trophy hunters to come "play", I know it sounds horrible, but if you knew how much these guys pay for a chance to hunt an Elephant or Lion (occasionally need to be culled also) and that all that money goes to conservation and staffing of the rangers who protect the reserves you may reconsider, as I did.

Hm. Okay. Khai and you make a fair point.
Anyone of you ever thought about turning veggie, or cutting back on meat? I love meat - cutting it, cooking it (yours truly does a mean Flemish beef stew ), eating it, but I can't shed the feeling we're eating far, far too much of it.

Wow, I have my Domain hosted with GoDaddy and I'm actually quite appalled by this. I do understand culling and reasoning behind it, but his act was brazen and for sport, IMO. I've always had a certain affinity with elephants and collect elephant statuary from around the world. Being a long time animal rights activist and non-consumer of animal meats and byproducts, I am happy to remove my business from GoDaddy. Any suggestions on alternative hosting companies? (BTW- Thanks Kris for bringing this to my attention)

Hi Guys,
I've watched a few Nat Geo features on the 'problem' of elephants and humans living in close proximity. Its not easily managed but there are ways to do it, better than this sick video.
I think Mr Parson must be on ignorant man! What the hell is he thinking or is he thinking at all? I imagine Pete's take on this is probably the case. Its hard to criticize the wardens but I think they are wrong doing things this way.
Parson has probably paid a big price for the 'buzz' of shooting a bull elephant. However I think the price he paid is only the start of what he will have to pay through lose of business.
I use GoDaddy but will write to Mr Parson suggesting that he mend his ways and make amends by getting involved in more positive conservation procedures and change his gun for a camera.

I'm somehow surprised that you want us to take part of this debate...
So... Because this guy - who happen to be the CEO of GoDaddy.com - have a passion for something controversial, you want us to be judges...???What if you saw a video with the CEO and/or founders of Google, who share some kind of bizarre interests...
(could be anything from big game hunting to being members of a secret sect who sexually exploit young women in arranged role plays, to whatever you find bizarre)Would you boycott SketchUp - or Google itself for that matter...???
I've never heard about GoDaddy.com before today, so I can easily live without them...
But what if it was someone at a company, where I use whatever they do/produce on a daily basis...??
What if it was the CEO of Coca Cola...??
Would you boycott Coca Cola and start drinking Pepsi all of a sudden - although you've previously had a ton of arguments why you drink Coca Cola and dislike Pepsi - or visa versa...Do whatever you want to do because you find big game hunting disgraceful, but please also remember that your vendetta will hit innocent employees and their families...
Think twice... Please...!

Well - it's just an example...
You can switch Coca Cola with any other product you use on a daily basis... -

Yes. Someone has coined the term "flexitarian" for what describes our diet. For my other half it's mostly because of killing any animal, for me it's because I strongly disagree with modern industrial animal farming practices (how they are housed, what they are fed, the drugs they are given, how they are killed and processes, the treatment of the workers, etc...) and this practice affects the environment and our health. I do my best to choose local foods that I know where they came from (join a CSA or CoOp!) and support my local farmer. Everyone seems to want to hyper-polarize everything, from the preachy- annoying vegan to the unapologetic cholesterol soaked triple cheeseburger eater. Too few speak of moderation and a highly varied diet (I've lost count of the number of co-workers that I've attempted to get to try (insert foreign cuisine here), and no - they just want the fat and salt loaded plate at Friday's.
If anyone's interested "Fast Food Nation" is a good book about how fast food has changed the US and other countries.

Like the quote.

I don't have a GoDaddy account, but now I'm definitely going to get one in order to show my support for responsible hunting. If the animal rightists were consistent, then none would eat any animal or use any animal product. I know that is not the case.
