Problem rendering textures projected from photo
-
SketchUp version: 8
Operating system: Mac OS XI'm using SketchUp to help understand rockfall processes on mountainsides. For this task it's important, though very difficult, to produce accurate maps from photos taken in different weather conditions. My solution is to import points and generate a model of the terrain as a TIN, and then use Match Photo to project photos taken onto the TIN.
I produced a TIN from a regular grid of 25m elevation data 4km x4km in size, with approximately 44,000 triangles. Then I imported a 3MB JPG as a photo match, and aligned it with the slope. I then projected the textures from the photo onto the model. The problem is, when I view the model with the original foreground Match Photo switched off, then the texturing is bad, it's generally black, though some polygons have parts of the photo applied to them. When I switch the Match Photo back on, I can see the nicely textured model in the background.
As in the attached images (most are in the Match Photo layout), whenever the foreground photo is turned off the model is re-rendered with bad texture.
I shifted the model to the origin (it was several km away) and tried again - the texture projection process is ve-ry slow.. I also tried changing the projection options to partially visible faces, but it made no difference unfortunately. My feeling is that since I can see the texture well mapped when the foreground photo is switched on (with saving and re-opening the file etc.), it's more likely a lack of knowledge on my part (I'm new to this), or a display or performance issue - rather than a problem with the mapping process.
Have I done something wrong? Is the rendering reduced in the model view to improve performance? Is there a further step I should take? or are the models just too complex for SketchUp?
Cheers

Hi Kerry,
It's me "again" (from this topic).
Well, if the model was several kms away, moving it to the origin was definitely a good idea (for several but not necessarily related reasons). However I am still not wiser about the issue itself. Would there be any chance to share the model itself?
