I've never had it replace it.
Did you update from SU7? In which case I created a brand new folder, leaving the old SU7 alone. -
bmike, I'm always amazed how an installation like this can differ between people. I'm on a PC by the way.
But now that I'm thinking about it, I placed the plugins folder on the desktop, and copied it back after the new installation,
that's why it remade a new plugin folder. Sorry I wasn't so clear before. (senior Moment. )

TBH, I didn't have much hope for SU with the original version 8 introduction. I have to say that attitude has changed with the release of maintenance 1. I will gladly give my $95 for the upgrade from SU7 to SU8 now. Thanks to the team at Google that made this work.

When I try to upgrade i get this message:
"The update service has been disabled. Please contact your administrator."
...which sounds like its english, but there is no administrator to contact - this is a standalone laptop.
Never seen this message before - anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks thomthom - it turns out that you get this message if auto-check for updates is turned off....
"This error message can appear if SketchUp isn't checking for updates automatically. To fix it, click Window > Preferences > General and click Automatically check for updates."
so I did that, and all is good..

There is a 1 missing in the title of this thread.
The PC version is 8.0.4811.

WARNING - INSTALLER BUG
I wanted to do a fresh clean install of the release...
(1) I made a copy of the ENTIRE SU8 folder heirarchy, named "Beta of Google Sketchup 8" in the %ProgramFiles%/Google/ folder ...
(2) I uninstalled (thru Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs,) Sketchup 8.0M1beta6 (all went well, the app folder was removed, also the entire Sketchup8 key in the User Registry.)
(3) I ran the 8.0M1 installer
It created a new "%ProgramFiles%/Google/Google Sketchup 8" folder, as expected... BUT
it copied everything from my Backup folder heirarchy, ...THEN ... overwrote ALL the Google supplied files (rb, rbs, skm, skp, etc...) in BOTH folder heirarchys !!!
It destroyed my backup copies !!!
And.. (4) It installed that BLEEPIN' Google IE Toolbar without asking if I wanted it.. causing me to uninstall it. (Hate this!) I am installing an application .. and your installer is messin' with another unrelated application!!

EDIT: And the installer turned OFF my "Links" bar !! WTF! (I am a wee bit ticked off.) -
I had no such issues on either system I installed on... very odd.

But did you make a backup?
Seems if there is a subfolder under the Google folder, and it has "Google Sketchup 8" as part of the folder name (instead of an exact match,) the Installer gets confused.LESSON: when you make backups, change the foldername to something that does not have the substrings "Google" or "Sketchup" in it !!

I always move my backups to DVD, a server, or a thumb drive in case the drive goes -- but I was talking more about not having the additional software installed or settings changed.

This wasn't any more necessary an activity at release time than it was beforehand, since beta 6 is actually what we released for M1. It would probably have been best to leave it alone and allow the installer to automatically handle the details.

However, as one of two people who was responsible for creating the installer and someone who has spent countless hours testing it, I have to say that this is a pretty dubious claim. I'm not writing it off as impossible, but just as incredibly improbable. If I get a chance next week, I will try to take a look to see how much control we have over how the uninstallation is performed and whether there is an error to be found in how the list of files to remove is populated. It may also be a matter of either WiX or MSI conspiring to cause such havoc, in ways over which we have no control. I can tell you however that the uninstall logic has undergone very little change since its introduction in SketchUp 7 and this is the first I've ever heard of something even remotely like this being reported. It's far more likely that human error is to blame for the issue. One way to test this would be to repeat the exact same set of steps again. If your hypothesis about the name matching is correct, you'll get exactly the same behavior the next time around. Again, I'll see if I can find any evidence to support how this might happen, but given my experience with having written, tested, used and debugged the installer for the last several years, I just have to say that it's unlikely there will be anything to find.

I'm sorry to say that this is rather more plausible than your first complaint. We actually go to great lengths to ensure this sort of thing does not happen, because we recognize how frustrating it can be. Apparently we have a bit more work left to do there. Our intention is to program this so that when running the installer, you are asked whether you'd like to have the IE toolbar. Regardless of your answer, we attempt to write a registry value indicating that we've asked you this question. Any time after that when you run the installer, it should locate the registry key, recognize you've been asked before, and then not prompt you about it at all. Of course, it should never, ever install something against your wishes. The behavior you're describing is something we would never like to see happen.
Unfortunately, ever since IE 8 came out, the way we detect whether you already have the IE toolbar or not, as well as the way we do some things like setting Google as the default search engine (if you've asked for that to be done), is much more complicated than it used to be. We've tweaked it many times and have spent quite a while trying to debug any remaining issues, but it appears that we have a bit more work to do there.
As an aside, one thing I'd like to make very clear though is that for those of you who run registry cleaners or similar utilities, you're taking your life into your own hands to do so. Without being aware of how every registry key in the system is being used, you always run the risk of causing damage by removing things outside of the context of the installer program. I have no idea whether that's relevant in this case or not (I suspect not), but it may be important for others to think about for the future.

The Links bar / Menu Bar reset was just an annoyance. My last "bitch" looks this was major, but I didn't intend to mean it this way. It's the file overwriting that ticked me off, as it's creates reconstructive work for me to do.
Specifically on the IE toolbars resetting:
What I think happened... is that IE may have done this when your installer added the Google toolbar.
I run IE with the MenuBar OFF (to save screenspace,) and use the ALT key to "pop" it up, whenever I need access to the menu. It's a really neat feature that the Sketchup interface could use as an option, but you'd need to implement MenuBar classes instead of the old Menu class attached to the app window.
Anyway... after the Google Toolbar was installed and then removed (it basically had a popup balloon that said something like: "We've installed the Google Toolbar, do you want to keep it, or Uninstall it?" and I clicked uninstall. Also.. had to go thru the web poll questionaire "Why are uninstalling the Google toolbar?... etc")
... the check for Tools > Menu Bar was checked instead of unchecked.
Not a big deal.. I unchecked it again.. and the IE Menubar went back into hidden-popup mode.Same is true for the "Links" bar. On IE within the Favorites folder, is a special subfolder named "Links", and a companion menu toggle item, at Tools > Toolbars > Links which I had checked.
When checked, IE displays a toolbar titled "Links" and populates it with any Internet shortcuts in the %UserProfile%\Favorites\Links folder. I don't have any in there (and delete or move the ones Microsoft puts in there,) but instead put custom subfolders in the "Links" folder. IE then creates dropdown menus on the Links Toolbar for subfolders of the Links folder, and submenus for subfolders of subfolders ... etc. etc.
Basically, in this way, the Links Toolbar becomes a My custom menubar of links that I need quick access to. (See attached image of a Links submenu named "HTML" opened.)
Again.. After the Google toolbar was removed... I had to go thru the Tools menu, to recheck, the Links menu item, so the Links toolbar would be displayed.It is an annoyance... mostly. I don't know who or what is to blame (it may occur when ANY toolbar is added to IE7.)
BTW.. I will update to IE8 (.. just have been putting it off,) the 5 other machines in the household have been updated to IE8 already.
Because I did an UNINSTALL first, the HKCU\Software\Google\Sketchup8 registry key was removed, possibly along with the attribute you mention that keeps track of previous installer check boxes. (But I dont see it in there.. I know I have seen it somewhere before.. somewhere in the registry. DING! It rings a bell.)
Anyway.. I recall in previous installers that there was a checkbox for the Google Toolbar. I recall previous forum discussions that people wanted it unchecked by default... according to popular opinion.
I recall it was usually checked by default. This is not new generally.. OpenOffice Installer has an IE toolbar option that I think is checked by default (making me always uncheck it.) Anyway.. the only toolbar I run is the one for with my Anti-Virus program.BUT... THIS timeI do not recall seeing any toolbar checkbox, during installation. I recall the EULA confirm dialog.. and the Install Location dialog.. and thats was it.
Am I going crazy? Did anyone else see a Google toolbar checkbox on any of the 8.0M1 Installer dialogs?

P.S. - I understand Google wanting to promote it's products (the Google toolbar,) BUT I don't need it.
If you look at the image above, you will see that I have the IE built-in search bar already set to use Google search as the default.
In addition I have a link to my Gmail page, where it belongs, in my "Dan" Links subfolder, which appears as my Dan submenu on the Links toolbar.
It is a pet-peeve, that everyone's installer (not just Google's) is trying to install some toolbar. Bing or Yahoo or whatever.
My experience is that these toolbars compete with one another, to scan webpages, anti-phishing, anti-popup, etc. It's not needed as it's built-into IE since IE7 at least.
I NEVER run anymore than 1 add-on toolbar, usually the one that comes with the AV program that is installed on the machine.

~I've never seen a question about the Google Toolbar when installing SU, and it never got installed this time around,(Win 7) but the toolbar did get installed on my old Vista system with SU7(very annoying!) without asking if I wanted it.
BTW Dan, I use IE Beta 9...its very fast, you might try that.

Thanks... I've kept IE7 installed so I can test WebDialogs running under IE7... (if that matters.) There are things I don't like about IE8. And on some computers I prefer to use FireFox. (Example.. the Apple Dev website does not display correctly in IE7.)
