      Hey guys,

Im in grade 11 this year and will be using sketch up in a class I have. I was hoping this class would give me a boost of knowledge going into university .The only problem is he has shown me what were working and for the first half of the year. It is design spheres and other basic shapes ๐Ÿ˜ž.

Thats why i went looking and found this site. I have been using sketch up for about 2-3 years. I have a few questions i would like to ask:

Is kerkythea a good rendering program to be using?(I am limited to only a free one due to paying off a good computer)
Is it worth getting google sketch up 8 pro?
Whats some good things to model to build technique?
What are some good plugins to be using? ( at the moment i have downloaded all plugins in the "Must have ruby scripts" topic)
Am i allowed to post pictures of my work even though its nothing like what you inspirational people do? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

      Thankyou from Moto_joel

        Hi Jolean (and welcome)!

Kerkythea is a really good and powerful rendering software and although the learning curve is a bit steeper than for some of the built-in plugins, it is well worth the try. The Kerky Forums is also a very good place to hook tips and tricks.

Well, SU Pro would be worth if you needed the extra tools. Beside the (new) solid tools, there are no extra modelling tools however so if you only model and render, I would keep the money for the time being (or at least just get a student license if that is available for K-12 students as well).

For practising, anything will do that interests you. I would be bored to death if I had to model cars but others hate buildings and so on...

Plugins? Look around in the Plugins forum and in the Plugin index topic. There are lots of them even not listed in the "must have" list (that is too subjective anyway). Even better; if you need something for a specific task, just ask here.

Finally, as for posting your work? Sure, please. It is always refreshing to see something different than these old farts do in their petrified styles.

          Thankyou for the answers ๐Ÿ˜„

I have one more question, how do you model like ground and hills. I have found it somewhere. After reinstalling sketch up i now cannot find it ?
By the way i think its a tool?

The sandbox tools. They need to be activated under Window > Preferences > Extensions. After this you can activate the toolbar from View > Toolbars.

But you can also import some Google Earth terrain (and modify that) or create these meshes (also called as TIN = Triangulated Irregular Network) with other tools.

What is your major interest in modelling?

My major interest in modelling is to some day go to university to be a architect your another area of modelling.
This is due to the inspirational things i see in everyday life and my enjoyment of seeing my ideas work.

So if architect then buildings (and certainly their environments) mainly. Good. There are tons of architects here.

Perhaps a good place to start is to model a local building (or public sculpture, bridge, etc.) for Google Earth.

Model your own house, if it is a house you live in.
                    Easy access for dimensions!
That's what I did when I started out.
