Request for Centering Plugin
-
If one exists already, could somebody point me in the right direction?
When I model a column or something similar I often make separate pieces— base, transition, shaft, transition, capital, etc. I sometimes can center them by building in transitions with the same size, shape and orientation. However, often I can't. Then I use a stub line coming from the center to give me a handle to move and align them. Problem is, when I leave any extraneous geometry in a solid I can't use solid tools (major frustration). Without the extraneous geometry it's tough to align.
How about a ruby to align things? Maybe a checkbox to pick the axes that need aligning, then bring the relevant centerpoints or edges into alignment.
Thanks,
Jim

I don't know. I am a little hazy on your explanation, but perhaps TIG's Center of Gravity, or was it ThomThom or someone else with user reposition of component axes? (not sure of the script names)

If you use construction geometry (guides) inside your groups/components, they won't "destroy" the solidness. Here is a plugin that adds a centerpoint to anything you can imagine.

How about just moving the axes of each component so the origin is at the center of the appropriate face. That origin is the insertion point and you'll have hold of it when you bring the component in from the Components browser. Then you can find the center of the mating face with the inferencing tools to drop it. Or you could place some intersecting guides at the desired insertion point. You can see a demo of that starting at about 8:14 in the video here. Sorry its so far in.
