I've been pondering about this for a while now...

      In a world...
...where 500 million people are active Facebook users...
...where you no longer need to go through the hassle of creating a new account to access an online service or post a comment; all you need is your Facebook/Windows Live/Google account for all that.
...when services like Guerrillamail and Bugmenot exist for the sole purpose of saving you the hassle of signing up to sites that do not yet accept your Facebook/Windows Live/Google credentials...

      In a time...
...when anything you post on Facebook, be it a video, a picture, a link or a random thought, automagically generates something very similar to the old concept of "forum thread"...
...when there are more Google searches for Facebook than for sex...
...when Facebook keeps adding more and more ways to bring together people with similar interests and participate in discussions, create events, share high definition pictures and the like...
...when it's so complicated to share a picture or a video in an old-fashioned phpBB forum but it's so easy on Facebook...

...will forums like this one soon become obsolete?

I frequent many discussion groups on FB, the only problem right now is file sharing, once we can share files on FB it will IMO take over.

That is share files within your post/attachment

            Didn't think about that one...
Yup, file sharing might be the only thing missing from a Facebook community page...

...and the ability to add images to comments.

Don't know anything about FaceBook. Is it about people, or topics? Is the only hassle with forums, registration? I can check out a forum before joining, but don't I have to join FaceBook in order to find topics? Any help is appreciated.

I am just coming to grips with facebook. I am not too wild about the format. Everything you do loads you with cookies.
Dumb as I am, I needed an answer to a question not found in the FAQ. Of course, facebook does not have a "helpdesk"
If you have to change your email address-which your account is tied to- do you lose all the content you may have posted to date? Do you have to re-establish all those ties to friends you may have spent a considerable amount of time developing? If so, can you offload/backup the content for the new account/email?
Do they really have it all figured out? Really?

I have a FB account. I have no problems with it. I've never been hacked, I don't have 10,000,000 psychopathic stalkers as friends.

I also rarely use my account. I absolutely never no not ever play any games on it. I don't add apps for geneology or take quizes.

But I do take the time to add real friends. Every so often I'll think of another set of cousins I have not tried to find on Facebook, or a few good friends from different stages in my life that I would like to be able to loosely keep track of.

I find Facebook suits me just fine for how I want to use it - which is very casually. I've never felt a need to spend more than 10 minutes on it at a time. And I only log in about 3 times a month. It is just a convenient way to find al my old friends, and not really have to pay attention to them, but I know where they are if I need them.

I've found Facebook is much less of a nuissance than I thought it would be. I do HATE the layout though. Its like a senile monkey with A.D.H.D. designed it.

Wonder how one will control spam in facebook, with forum software we have stop forum spam and similar mean... is it available for facebook? This maybe nightmare for high volume forums, how to separate potential spammers vs actual users. Personally, I would prefer forum style communication.

I also have a facebook account but I do not use it for anything else than about Chris above. Logging in like 2-3 a week though.

As for logging in at SCF with (say) a Google account; well, no. As longs as about 80% of our spammers spam here with gmail addresses and Stop Forum Spam lists Gmail as the top spammer domain, no way. 👊

You can also try to log in with a bugmenot account here. 😉
I do not mind (and ban) temporary emails however there is no chance to receive further assistance once someone has no access to the original email account.

I do not think FB (or any similar) could take over highly specialized forums like this. Maybe some social, community chit-chat but the ability to do whatever we want here and flexibly change the format, add services we want (or can), new forums or rearrange old ones to the needs of the membership is a very big advantage.

Now not to speak about a product support forum where admins need to take care of their members private data (like licenses and such) and would NOT like a big social networking site to poke in their data.

                            Gai...

True. This is also (one) reason why I never use these stupid apps that (secondly) are just time wasters and annoying.

I hope Facebook goes the same way myspace/bebo went. Tits up!

It's a pain in the hole. Fine if you wanna have a bit of fun or if a site wants to distribute some important info. But this poking and thumbs up stuff is for kids. I've a facebook account so my friends and family can see pics of my son. That's it. It's handy to track Twilight and other interests.

I really couldn't see forums being replaced by this. If it did I'd still frequent forums as it's the best means of communicating. I couldn't give two sh!ts if FB disappeared in the morning. I realise it's vital for disseminating info for certain businesses and for family to keep in touch but as a special interest medium it's too ragged.

But if I become single anytime soon I'm sure it'll be essential 😉

I never understand why facebook gets criticim from some quarters.

I love FB, because I've tweeked it to suit ME.

I hate the apps, never use them, I block them on my newsfeed so they never show. I am never friends with people who I wouldn't speak to if I bumped into on the street. I hide my friends and family members if they write drivel and i stop 'liking' things for similar reasons. I never poke. Sure, it takes you a little while to streamline your page but once you have.

With things like they are today, most of my friends are online between 8 and 5, and like me, spend a significant proportion of their leisure time online. It just makes sense, as a way to chat and share. 😄

I believe a better use of time is getting involved in the help forums. It's truly amazing how much you can learn from reading issues that people have with utilizing some of the internet tools that provide help forums, and seeing how those issues are addressed by more experienced users.

I would encourage anyone that has the time to be on Facebook to use that time to maybe contribute some of their expertise in helping others that don't have as much experience.

Between SketchUp, Google Earth, Google Maps, Google Places, and a number of many different help forums, there is plenty to do, and many that could use your help.
