Happy Holiday or happy Christmas?
-
Noticed that Aidan Chopra used 'happy Holiday' in the SketchUpdate Newsletter. What do you use?
I use Happy Christmas in the same way I would use Happy Eid or Happy Diwali. My wife, who is a Hindu, uses Happy Christmas and sings in our local church choir and has no problem with acknowledging a 'Christian' feast day.
Kind regards,

Well, this is rather language specific of course and the "Happy Holiday" seems to be a "tolerant", cross-religion invention coming from the US. (They have these thing with sexes/genders, too, so in the US the do not have firemen, chairmen or policemen any more.)
Here we use Christmas (when we are Christians) and my mother's old friend from Jerusalem calls us on every Christmas Eve to say "Merry Christmas" and my mom say "Merry Hanukkah" to her. No problem with that in our Hungarian language but we do not have a "general" term for the holidays.

I normaly say : Happy Christmas Holiday so there is no difference between both.
Join them together and every is happy -
Happy Holidays was used extensively in the business world, especially retail, in pasr years, but the fundamentalist Christians took great offence to that and waged a campaign against it, so now more and more stores are going back to Merry Christmas. Personally, I take whatever greeting is rendered in the spirit it was given, so anytime someone wishes me happy anything I accept it gladly.
Gaieus, at least where I live, chairman, firemen, etc. are still used, but changed to the feminine where needed.

Does it matter? As long as the alcohol does the business, who cares?
