I recently plugged my external hard drive (MY Book) into my laptop (XP) before turning it on and for the first time it wouldn't be recognized, and when plugging it back into my running desktop (recently upgraded to Win7) it still wasn't there...? So I powered the drive down and back up and then it worked fine...?

The geek squad says it (the disk, not the mechanism) is about to go bye-bye big-time for good and needs to be replaced...got a second opinion you'd share, thanks?

I had a problem with a dissapearing HD that was solved by turning OFF UAC.
There is a free little software that does it easily. Just Google for TweakUAC.

(For what it's worth I dont like MyBook hard drives.)

              UAC = User Account Control = ๐Ÿ‘ฟ
Its meant to give better security but is extremly annoying.
What it does is basicly that it freezes the computer whenever you for example wish to install something.
Then it creates a screen dump of the screen and shows it so you think the pc is "live" plus a popup that asks if you reeeeeaaaaalllly want to do this.
Only after you click ok the pc is "live" again.
And as the link below shows also can do other weird stuff.
Read about my troubles here: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=17248
Once I turned it off with TweakUAC I havent had these problems.

I have a reluctant external HDD and found that the problem was the USB port on the HDD was slightly loose in the case. The case surrounding the port was stopping the USB cable plug going fully home.

I removed the case and the USB cable now goes fully home every time and the HDD works every time.

Just got to figure out how to get the socket to sit far enough forward in the case ....

Life's a reach, and then you gybe.

Also might worth to try with another USB cable.

I've had similar problems 3 times. Once, the case itself went bad. I just pulled out the hard drive, connected it internally and it was fine for a few years afterwards. Then once I had a hard drive doing the same thing and it ended up going bad and I did not have it backed up. I lost most every picture I took during 2009 (until I get the money to recover it). Then the 3rd time, I was having a ton of random computer issues - drives not working all the time, RAID kept breaking down, CD-rom couldn't write to discs anymore, then suddenly wouldn't even initialize, card reader kept dieing......turned out my powersuply was going bad. I replaced that and everything came right back to life.

So, it could be a host of problems. But seriously I would make sure to back it up ASAP just in case it is on the verge of going down forever.

Lately you've been tan, suspicious for the winter.

Wrong, probably. Its a known conflict on WD mybook disks.
If speed is not what you need try WD passport disks. Nothing bad so far (except the speed)
WD MyDisks have a problematic interface. WD Studio versions as well.
BTW try another power supply first.

I once bought a Mybook World NAS and it was the worlds biggest piece of crap.
It was extremly sloooow and refused to back up ANY files with the extension mp3 or avi and almost any other media formats. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ ๐Ÿคข ๐Ÿ˜†
Obviously they had decided that any such files must be pirated.
I returned it to the store and got a refund.
Now I'm trying to avoid anything from Western Digital.
