      Hi !

I was asked by a friend of mine to retrieve the buildings surrounding the door of Brandebourg in Berlin from Google Earth.

      Brandebourg.jpg

I thought this would be easy ( πŸ˜• ) but it seems some buildings can be downloaded (the main one with the columns and the one on its right). These are highlighted in blue when rolling over. But the others don't seem to be downloadable...

I don't have much time to investigate this but I thought maybe someone has come across this before and will be willing to share this exciting ( πŸ˜’ ) experience with me!

      Thanks a lot!
      Nicolas

        Hi Nicloas,

There are several ways of providing data (including 3D) for GE. The only buildings you can access for download are the ones that have been shared via the 3D Warehouse AND the download has not been disabled (that can also happen).

I had a look and indeed only those two seem to have been uploaded this wy. Probably all the others were made with Building Maker (or in some other app - even maybe SU - and uploaded as batch data) and you cannot access that.

Everything is not permitted in the wonderful world of Google? πŸ˜„
Too bad, I had imagined Google Earth as a new El Dorado!

Thank you for taking a look Gaieus!

Note that it is not Google's decision but of thiose who provide the data.

When I upload a model to GE, the model is still mine and I can decide how and which extent I want to share that model.

            • viewing on GE only
            • viewing in GE and the Warehouse
            • even downloadable in the Warehouse
            • publicly editable in the Warehouse
              etc.

Actually, as far as Google is concerned, I can't really complain for they provide me the (nearly) free tools that enable me to feed my family!

As to people's decision not to share their models, I can't say much about this except it can be frustrating sometimes (like in this occasion for example πŸ˜‰ )

Ah yes, that can be frustrating.

As well as when others download those models and use them for commercial purposes without the author's consent.

                  Absolutely.

The only thing with the 3d warehouse and the Google tools in general is it makes it so easy to find and use resources, it's sometimes hard to credit the original authorS.

I have to say I'm a big borrower of models found on the warehouse and I don't always take the time to even thank the authors...
I don't feel good for that but it's sometimes hard to foresee which model you're going to need/use.
It's even harder because of the increasing amount of details we are now able to use in our models.

Since I don't always find the time and energy to thank people for what they've shared, my point of view is I need to share more models myself in order to keep the community alive.

I also do share models and don't really mind if someone uses them for whatever purpose (if someone shares models this way in the WH, he/she has to accept this).

There is some different stuff with 3D buildings for GE. If one wants to model a city, it is mainly not for the WH audience but for GE and its visitors so he/she may prevent those buildings from being downloaded.

Just an example: in a certain city, though not too many buildings are there (still quite numerous), there was a company who downloaded them all, added their (rather crappy) models of other blocks and sold it as a walkabout tour for the municipality.

Now that's what I do not call an ethical business behaviour.

If you upload a GE model to the WH and check that it's real and GE ready BUT do not allow anyone to download or even see the model, the Warehouse QA Team still revise them and will put on GE (if all the other criteria is met of course). This is a good way of companies to develop quite big parts of cities without giving away their 3D data.

                    Gai...

I get your point : not ethical is a sweet euphemism!

By the way, we found a workaround : I told my friend to mask the unnecessary buildings and upload his model on GE. πŸ˜„
