I found this Ivy Generator here on the SCF the other day... another great treasure thread.

the Ivy Generator is free and works quite well. until it gets to sketchup...
it's quite easy to take your main walls and export them into an OBJ file and insert them into the Ivy Generator. growing vines of beautiful ivy is only a click or two away after that.
however after exporting the OBJ model and importing it back into sketchup, the import takes forever even with what I think are small geometries.
when I import the ivy the textures are not showing up.
the OBJ does not make components of the ivy leaves and the edges are on when importing them.
I'd be interested to know if any of you are using this and what presets you are using and examples of some of your ivy...

The last two evenings I also have been playing with this ivy generator. I love the app, getting the Ivy back in SU is a real pain in the ***. after a few tests I'm using this workflow at the moment, but I hope there is an easier way.
export model from SU in OBJ file. Open OBJ file in Ivy Generator. Let the Ivy grow in the app. Then export obj file+mat.
The first time I tried using OBJ import plugin by TIG. This doesn't work. Or maybe it does but I don't want to wait a day or two.
I decided to import the obj in Vue to try and export it again as 3ds file. But Vue also decided to not cooperate. It freezes on export. Don't know if it will eventualy defreeze, but I decided not to wait for it.
Next I gave Cinema 4D a try. import OBJ file to Cinema 4D and then export to 3ds file. Cinema 4D for some reason has no problems and converts the OBJ to 3ds rather quick.
Then I import the 3ds file in SU. Then I noticed that the materials are not imported. The material names do show up in the material browser in SU so I decided to link the ivy materials ( leafs, and branch texture ) to the SU materials using Indigo.
I managed to get two ivy models in my architectural model. I put them in a seperate layer because otherwise SU wont work anymore ( another good reason for 64 bit I think )
I wil post a pic as soon as my render is finished.

Sorry to bump this thread after all these years.
I've been playing with Ivy Generator and I found that if you import the obj mesh into Meshlab it will export perfectly to 3DS for use in SKetchup, including textures, as long as the mesh has less than 65536 vertices.
Note that Meshlab 64 bit does not support 3DS export, so you have to use the 32bit version.
