I need a tool that will make the selected edges longer by a set distance.

There might be a lot of plugins that do it, but you (and me) are unaware of.

I believe there is a ruby at Ruby Library Depot, or Smustard. Also, possibly Didier Bur's Projections Tool?
Just use a keyword search. Also, take advantage of the Plugins Index permanent topic I believe in the Plugins subforum.

why not just turn on the extensions in styles? ... or do you actually need the lines drawn

You can deal that whit the Smart Push Pull by a4chitect
It's not automatic for that you want but that can help

Just select after only faces(without segments) (and kill them)
For this Selection Toys by Thomthom is your friend

Make only the top and a side then make a two copy mirrors with the 3 corner lines
Mirror by TIG is also your friend

2D Tools - Adjust Tool = extend line(s) by TIG can help too! (multiple selection possible)
Just Draw with the Offset tool a rectangle external from a face (with wished size)
Then call the plug all extensions are made just by one click + drag
