I am an interior designer and would like to use sketch up to draw floor plans (2D), is this possible on the regular version or do I need pro? I am pretty familiar with CAD and was hoping it would work similarly to do this sort of thing?
      thanks!

You can do that with the free version, just set your camera view to "Top" and "Parallel Projection" and be careful not to orbit at all, but zooming and panning is OK

Hi, IMO Su is a primarily a 3d modeling application. While you are are able to draw 2d, it will not be without effort. SU free doesn't have the horse power to do production drawings. You need SU Pro, with LO for that. Even then it will not have the flexibility that many other Cad system have in regards to production drawings.

Thanks...I will try the camera view first in the free version. Right now I am looking to do very basic floor plans to play around with furniture size, etc... show the client some ideas but nothing to be presented formally.

For that, it is indifferent if you use pro or free. When you are in a parallel projection > top (standard) view, make sure to create a scene (View menu > Animation > Add scene) and once you inadvertently navigate out of this top view, just click on the scene tab and it will get you back.

You can also use 3D components (furniture and such) to populate your 2D floor plans but if you only want to use 2D components, make sure they are set to glue to a horizontal plane and also that they cut a hole in their gluing plane otherwise you will experience some nasty Z-fighting between the floor face and the component face being on the same plane/space.

              Gai...
