      Hello,

just a curiosity I wanted to share with you. This is the tip with some nice video:

The largest augmented reality marker recorded in the Guinness Book of Records has been created with a customization of the ARmedia Plugin.

          Graziano,

This can be seen on the laptop monitor, right?

The coolest would be if all who are around could see it!
          πŸ˜„

Nevertheless it is indeed a nice one!

Cool! What did they do with large sheet? πŸ˜‰

This to me is where augmented reality starts getting interesting - placing markers in real locations for some real visualization.

Doing this in cities so people can see the plan for the future of their city would be awesome. If you need a project manager Graziano, give me a call. I've got lots of ideas for using this type of technology on a city scale. Just no money to make it happen πŸ˜†

so the guy in the helicopter was able to see it, and everyone else saw a sheet on the ground?

                what am i missing?
the software keys to the sheet, and the model is overlaid on the screen, as someone is watching... right?

not trying to be a downer, just trying to see what application this might have in its current form.
it appears one still needs something in the physical world to key the augmented world to...
unless you can geolocate using gps, or other nearby features - wifi, cell towers, street lamps, etc... no?

Exactly, one still needs something int he phyiscal world to key to - the big black and white sheet in this case.

What you had a bldg to demolish and replace. You could stick one of those sheets on the bldg face - or maybe a bunch of smaller ones, whatever it takes. Then have virtual reality like goggles that people on the street can wear and as they walk passed the building, they can see the new design projected in place. Something like that would be intersting.

Or maybe it works where they poiint their cell phone camera to it, and it is running the visualization app. And it can show the new building in place right on their phone display. Lots of ways too make it work. And I think it is most interesting when its done in context. Displaying a model a building on my desk at work - interesting, but not that amazing. Displaying a model of proposed building on location - that's pretty awesome!

                  Chris

From a future perspective a marker of that size is simply ridiculous and shows a lack of technology (where is GPS?). I think the main aspect of that great project is advertising and to make people aware of augmented reality (although they don't see).

I could imagine to have billboards or hoardings covered with foil screens around a building pit. That would allow people to individually experience the augmented reality. Future is gorgeous.

I agree with you all in a way or another.

My aim here was essentially to share with you the funny fact that people out there have started to create entries in the Guinness World Records that relate to augmented reality and the ARplugin. As the project was really simple, I really had no idea they would make an attempt to it.

On the other hand, there are at least three interesting facts emerging from the opinions of you all.
                      It is interesting that

                      1. people have started using AR on the urban scale to visualize projects in real time not only by means of mobile phones (mobile devices like iPhone are very limited with respect to 3d capabilities)
                      2. they put effort on a project that has a commercial character
                      3. this opens out the way to a lot of other similar applications in the fields of architectural visualization, advertising etc.

                      @ Gaeius
Yes, but people with suitable devices (AR goggles, tablets, portable computers etc) at a given distance could see it from their perspective. Actually, with this project setting they could not see it from the bottom using a single big marker. A different solution based on multi markers or even other sensors would make this possible.

                      @ Chris
Thank you for your valuable comments, but most of all thank you for your offer πŸ˜„. I will surely give you a call when the market will be ready for you! πŸ˜„

                      @ Aerilius
I generally tend to agree with you on this, but GPS alone is not a solution as it will not give you the precision you require to locate the 3D model. On the other hand, GPS together with other kinds of sensors will do a great job. There are different ways to approach a good solution indeed. Also an appropriate multimarker solution would give people the benefit of both advertising and visualization from almost any side and distance.
