Photoshop Question

Hi all
Hope someone will be able to answer a PS question for me.
Im used to opening a PNG (Vray output) in PS and having the Alpha channel cut out (transparent) on the same layer
But when I save image as a EXR, it opens in PS with a Alpha channel.
Can somebody point me to a good tutorial or tell me how to use the Alhpa channel to cut out or make transparent background.
Like a PNG exported from Vray with a VFB AlphaHope the picture explains it better

Make the alpha channel visible, the other channels invisible, then make sure you are working on the alpha channel, use select by color range to pick the black background. Now make the other channels visible and the alpha channel invisible, go back to your layer, the background selection should still be showing, cut, now you can place your new background behind your layer. Or you could save the selection, open whatever image you want to use for the background and load your selection, cut, now you can place your new background on top of your layer.
