Has anyone read Pillar Of The Earth by Ken Follet?
It's one of my favourite ever novels, all set around the building of a 12th Century cathedral. It's a bit of an epic but would recommend it to anyone wanting a bit of light historical reading. In fact, for me, it's probably the best piece of historical fiction.

Yeah, I really enjoyed that too. Not a fan of his other books though - tried and failed to read a couple. May give him one last chance at some point though....

I thought both novels were so well written I had to search online to find out if the town was real. One thing that drives me crazy about 90% of the NYT bestsellers is that they're: sappy and introspective, motivational self improvement (if you would only believe it enough, it will happen
!) , transparent tearjerkers, or brainy librarian hunk has rolicking adventure through history and gets the girl - or any even worse combination of any of the aforementioned. OK, rant done; POTE and WWE let the bad guys live long lives and killed off perfectly good people. Thank You Mr. Follett for not writing another lame book desperately trying to be DaVinci code or a movie script. I also like very much how he worked in what life was like then for different classes of people, how the church was built and designed and all that. People here would surely appreciate the latter!Good reading, I couldn't put the books down.

Indeed, my sentiments exactly.
I recently had a tour around Fountains Abbey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fountains_Abbey near to my home. It was incredible the amount of stuff regarding monastic architecture and the monastic way of life that i "knew" as the tour guide was telling us, all of it from POTE and a bit of light reading around the subject after reading Follet. Brilliant stuff!
