Hi I am new to sketchup, and have been watching many videos to learn how to model, and have learned most of the things i need....
.... but I am having a problem with textures...... I want to import a jpg as a texture, but all the videos on youtube are made on macs, they say "select face - goto file import - import jpg as texture" i get as faer as "goto file import" but i dont have an option to import jpg files... just skp,dwp,dxf.... do i need a plugin or am i doing something wrong?
I am using sketchup pro 7.1 on windows vista

Curious all that you say is 3D !
Have you scroll this list?
2D formats are normally after the 3D format! (PC screen)

This is interesting, my import choices have 12 selections (including Google Earth Files, and Photo Shop), Pilou's 10 and yours 2.

I have SU V6 free, maybe this explain that

I don't know, but because of zordork's 2, I suspect something else is involved. Maybe the OS.

Nay, guys, the import options should be there. Zordok, I wonder if your SU installation has gone wrong somehow. Could you try to reinstall SU?

managed to imported a jpg now, thanks guys. but 1 more question, is it possible to layer textures on the same surface.. (IE. paint graffiti onto a brick wall)
-
No layered materials are possible in SU. You can work this around however in two different ways:
- One is to put an imported image (import it as image, not as texture) on top of a textured face. Obviously you will need to create a graffiti with transparent background for this.
Normally when there are two layers of textures on top of each other (on the same plane) in SU, some nasty Z-fighting occurs as there is no such thing as "stacking order" in SU (and in 3D generally).
Imported images are the only exception. See this example from the 3D Warehouse (well, not a graffiti but you get the idea...):
(click on the image for the model)
[list:1i0t0ehz][*:1i0t0ehz]The other way is to make the texture on a certain face unique and edit it in an external image editor. For this,
- first of all set your favourite image editor as default for SU under Window > Preferences > Applications (see step 3 below)
- Now right click on the face whose texture you want to apply the graffiti on (single face; NOT curved surface, NOT group/component) and "Make texture unique".
This will create a new material of the whole texture covering that face (if the face is not rectangular, the "rest" will be white but at least you can see where windows, doors and such are...) - Now right click again and Texture > Edit texture image... This will open your image editor you set instep 1 and launches the image. Edit it to your likes, add graffiti and whatnot - when you save the image, it will be instantly reloaded in SU.[/list
