How do I convert an .xml to a LayOut documetnt?

I am on a mac and a google tech helped me with a document issue. great, but the file I received back was in a .xml format, I do not know what I have to do to open this file?
any ideas?

Put the files (and folders) into a *.zip archive and rename the *.zip extension to *.layout.
