OK, so after visiting this site for a couple of months and admiring all the pro's work, I thought I'd take the plunge and give these challenges a try, first time
I am soso in getting around in Sketchup and have been making some architectural models for work, but I'm very new to this whole rendering happening and from the getgo get overwhelmed by all the abreviations people are using, anyway ....I guess I'll have to make a list :0)

How does one go about starting this thing? I am using twilight and understand I have to assign materials from the Twilight library ... so I started to take on that task, but in disecting this model, I noticed something odd ... This is a wicked detailed table lamp but it appears that it is made out of all .... "groups". The only component is the table. I was under the understanding that in Sketchup, it is best to make components out of repeating items. Did I download it wrong? Is part of the challenge that I make it into groups? This model is reacting superslow and I haven't even applied anything fancy yet. (What I envision for this lamp is to be all rusty and damaged, but still working here and there, like it has been an old artifact dug up, o say, a 100 years from now).

I would really appreciate the feedback and guidance as I take the dive into render world :0)
        thanks, DutchEsse

Quick try. Got some funny reflection from a TV screen. Raw kerkythea output. ๐Ÿ˜„

Whow guys, This is very cool. I wanna thank all of you: Solo, Timmy 16744, D-space, Earthmover, Urgen, Massimo, Rico91, Tallbridgeguy, Stefanq and all the other people. I did not know this model, gives so many people this kind of creativity. I'm really impressed.

I hope we can do this more often.

Maybe got someone an idea for a "render this" or "model this"

I would but......"Please wait, processing model..."

Hey thanks Frederik, I checked out the thread, and of course new questions arise. Why exactly is there a need for 2 meshes; one emitter (low poly) and one fake emitter (high poly)? Doesn't the 2nd layer add lots of triangles again to the model? Also, the question still remains why this model is composed of all groups, shouldn't it be all components since there are lots of repeating parts to this cube lamp?

I suggest that you post these question in a seperate thread or at the TWR Forum in order not to hijack this thread... ๐Ÿ˜„

                    Nope...
That's why you need to apply a "fake emitter" to the high-poly parts... ๐Ÿ˜‰

                    Yes and no...
Obviously the person modelling this can make components instead of groups, but for this model I can't see it matters much... ๐Ÿ˜

yeah you are correct!! I don't know why it turned out like that. I used the common realistic glass template, perhaps the refraction is too high for this type of glass ๐Ÿ˜• hmmm

Ok, I'm far from a pro but this model just screams to get rendered .

This is my (amateuristish) attempt. Didn't have much time to set it up though (my boss keeps reminding me that i have a deadline for that paper I have to write ๐Ÿ˜’ ), but I'm quite happy with the result so far.

The first thing that came into my mind is that it looked a bit like a space ship docking station. Hence the death star and the star trek voyager ... ๐Ÿ˜„

My job isn't writing letters, i'm actually a career coach. (But I have/had to write some reports concerning a european project I'm participating). English isn't my mothertongue (that's Dutch) so my appoligies for the misunderstanding

                                          Did I already mention that it's a fantastic model ? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do you have more stuff like that? It's actually more motivating trying to render good models than the models I (attempted) to put together myself.
