Editing imported models in 3DS MAX

Hi people,
it seems to me that regular editing tools fail to work properly on models imported from SketchUp. It looks like polygon normals are not stored correctly since tools like chamfer and mesh smooth don't work as expected. Does anyone know how to workaround this problem? Do I have to watch for something while editing in SU? Is there a smarter export plugin perhaps? SU sometimes could be better for modeling certain things than MAX, but I can hardly add details later after import.

Max actually handles SU geometry surprisingly well in my experience. I often chamfer edges and subdivide meshes while in Max. In Max, try doing a select all (Ctrl A), then applying an Edit Mesh or Edit Poly modifier to all geometry. Go into vertex sub-object mode and do a Ctrl A again to select all the verts in the model. Then in the modifier, click on Weld. You can then collapse modifier once the weld is finished running. Unwelded verts are usually the culprit when having issues with chamfering, etc.

Thanks guys, I didn't expect replies so soon! Buying more software is not an option for me, but I will definitely try that welding trick!
