The best way of creating grass in SketchUp is to use a group of intersecting transparent png files...like these http://www.google.com/images?hl=en-GB&q=grass+png&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3MOZA_en-GBGB328GB328&ie=UTF-8
I don't mean by using the Intersect command in SU...just arrange them on the ground, leaning slightly at all kinds of angles and directions. All these example have under 200 faces each for the entire clump of grass, yet they look just fine when rendered.

Alan, Any chance that you can provide a example of "jumbled" png files, before and after render?

Here's a very quick example...and how it renders. If I'd spent longer arranging the clones more randomly...so many of them weren't at the same height and angle, it would have looked much better.

Thanks, Got it. Did you use a plugin to distribute the components, then go back in and adjust them?

No. I just made a few, then copied and rotated them. Then kept selecting everything and copy/rotating that till I'd got enough. You only have to do that a few times to end up with a ton of them.

OMG Alan, I thought it was a photo of your backyard!!!
Wish I could do something similar with my limited imagination and skills...
Any chance you could make a tutorial on the subject? -
Thailand Thankyou

Alan, you need to model a lawn mower.
