And please, don't make me buy a 3rd party app, I could use an excellent freeware app just for this. -
theres a list of apps that it works with, around half of which are freeware.

Yeah, thanks remus. But this is a list of apps, where you can export this SU UV-mapped model. Why to export there, edit UVs there and import again to SU? Its much better to UV unwrap in these apps, (blender for example, is superb on this). Because this has to do with organic modeling mostly, then another question, why not to model in these apps too (superb again). Thats why SU imports .3ds files.
So about this "model this" small friendly contest. Its about SU modeling only (IMO), using and learning SU. Using some ruby too. The .3ds import option is always there, waiting (lol). -

Really great idea. I know I haven't have the time to contribute to to all the "render this" threads, but I sure follow them. The same will probably apply to the model this thread, work always gets in the way of fun,but I will contribute for sure as I find it really helps me personally push boundaries. Good stuff solo.

So let me get this straight?
There is a new ruby that takes a SU model in SU format (.skp) into another app, this app allows you to unwrap it make maps in photoshop for example apply them and then send the model back into SU? I have a few questions also!This seems to good to be true, this app that you are referring to ar there more than one? could you use 3dsmax for example or blender?
Also does the SU file stay the same throughout or does it become 3ds for example. If that is the case things arnt looking so good anymore!
And lastly can somebody post a link to this ruby I looked but couldnt find it?Apart form this great news yeah on this 'model this'. As it is more inclined towards modeling than towards rendering do you even need to spent lots of time setting up a render? Its not my best part you see?

Sounds like a great idea. And for those newbie (me), I will hopefully be learning a few things along the way. I would like to see it without any outside rendering though and it is basically for selfish reasons.
It would be interesting also to see about doing a model with just the OOTB (out of the box) SketchUp - no rubies. THAT would be prove some challenges and thinking outside the box, per se.
Either way - I'm in!

+1. I would also love to see a "Vanilla SketchUp modeling challenge".
I can't live without rubies, so this would add an extra "challenge" factor to the challenge.

Good idea Pete...you know you can count me in. I LOVE to model!
Here's an idea. We have a "Model This" challenge, but exclude texturing all together. All models are presented with hidden geometry on and no rendering, albeit perhaps a clay render. The community chooses the best model based on cleanliness vs. poly count and the winning model is then offered up for download and submitted as the next "Render This" challenge.

Adam, that sounds like a great idea.
I was waiting for 100 yes votes then asking y'all what types of models should be requested, I did not want to jump into organics just yet and also wanted to not make it too dificult initially as alienating noobs is not my intention, but rather encouraging them to try. Failure is a big part of learning IMO.
So what shall we model?, something that folks will enjoy, something that folks could use and something that will interest most users.
ideas?

Should the models be of exactly the same object? For example rather that picking a screwdriver and getting different variations, the challenge would be -
Model this.....
Then everyone would be playing the same tune?
As Jean would say 'Just Ideas'

Rich, that's pretty much the idea, a picture of an object is posted and we all try model it by 'eyeballing' the dimensions, so without getting too technical with exact dimensions we will try and model the exact same item.
However this is just my idea, what do y'all think?
