      Hi ecuadorian!

Thanks for the info - I've sent off some emails. From the second link you posted, it looks like the third image comes from the same group.

This is definitely sketchup, though, right? I'm hoping some people with good eyes might be able to quickly guess what software is being used.

By the way, on an unrelated note, I'll be in Ecuador in a few months - any suggestions on what to see (other than the Galapagos)?

      Thanks again!
      Dave

Hi, and welcome to the SCF. 😛

There are many techniques, but your best bet is always asking directly to the authors. Who knows, maybe they didn't even use SketchUp for these.

The first image is the "Root/Breathe/Endure" house by Stuttio Workshop:
        http://www.freegreen.com/greensburg/plan-general.aspx?id=16
And here's their official website with more contact info:
        http://www.stuttio.com/

Second and thid images are the "Passive House HIB" project by Paravant Architecture:
        http://www.freegreen.com/greensburg/plan-general.aspx?id=123
        Their Contact form is here:
        http://paravant.org/contact.html

If they did use SketchUp, it would be cool if the authors could be interviewed for The Daily Catchup 😉 (Hint to SUC management).

Yup, I checked again and indeed the second and third images are of the same project. I updated my post.

Nice to know you'll be visiting here! 😛 Although I live in Guayaquil, I'd recommend skipping it (too hot and almost no nature to see) and going straight to the highlands, which are beautiful. Check the group of volcanic lakes surrounding Otavalo, north of Quito. Also, near Baños in Tungurahua you can do rafting and bike through the rain forest.

Don't forget to take the necessary precautions:

            thanks for the tips, ecuadorian!

regarding the modelling above, halil dolan from paravant architects wrote me back already and said that the renderings are done in rhinozeros with aditional editing done afterwards.

hopefully some people find this useful!

Cool, three of my friends from college use Rhinoceros. They have done awesome (and I mean, awesome) things with it. 👍

Anyone know how to get vegetation components like they have in that first pic?

                    FYI

Adamo Gumowski from Stuttio Workshop (responsible for the first image I posted) replied, saying that the models were created with Sketchup and Rhino, and then rendered with VRAY products from ASGVIS.

                    Good to know!

oh, one other question - is there a good resource for getting background images for sketchup rendering? (ie skies/fields, stuff like that?)

I suggest that you take a look at the Render application Home pages...

Also, have a look at this link collection of texture resources. Some have background images, too.
