There have been some other 3D PDF entries into the marketplace over the years, and we have had lots of discussions with Cad vendors and such. But the bottom line it that the casual interest in 3D PDF is much higher the the number of people willing to purchase such a product. We were hoping to learn that O3D might be a better alternative, but we will have to see.
We were planning to lower the cost of RPS 3D PDF next week when we announce the new HTML page generator, and hopefully the O3D/Collada embedding option. (If we can get o3D/Collada to work well enough). I'll go ahead and lower the cost this week, so people like you who have been waiting for a lower price can join the bandwagon.
That's the advantage of competition to the market place, we all get to see lower prices. I'm sure the developers of this new product will take the time to see the different modes we have added to RPS 3D PDF over the years, and add them as well - such as placing the 3D model on top of a background image.
I am concerned that people might confuse the words "trial version" and "free for non-commercial use version" I didn't see the phrase "free for non-commercial use" on their web site. (I did see the phrase "download trial version")
Actually, the "free for non-commercial use", when it used to apply to SketchUp was very confusing. I could never figure out what it allowed people to do and what the penalties were if someone tried to use the product for commercial purposes.

Free for non commercial use is very simple.
You download the software and it works for you, you do not need to register it to be able to try it, you can start generating 3D PDF files out of the box.
You are free to use the software as long as you are not using it to communicate files with paying clients.
You can use it for evaluation, a student can use it to share his work with his colleagues and professors, a user creating 3D Warehouse to share them for fun is also welcome to use it.
We expect an architect sending his model to a client to get paid to pay the small price of $75. This will allow him to get two licenses on Windows and Mac (he picks 2 Windows, 2Macs, or 1 and 1)
For $25 more, you also can get OSG Composer CAD, our stand alone application, which allows you to add geometries from 3DS, Maya, CATIA, Solidworks, and many other applications.

Now if only we could get a pdf reader that supports 3d files other than Adobe; which is so bloated and slow I refuse to use it.

Competition really good for the users, just like what the RPS 3D PDF announced that they will lower down their price next week, I really waiting for it, I used both their trial version (RPS and SIM LAB) and they are really both excellent software, all matters for me is the price so I will wait until next week to decide which software I will definitely buy.

Well you should purchase the other one then. We lowered our price from $189.00 to $99.00, so you can probably purchase the other one for a lower price.
Or you might want to wait until next week when we release the new version to see if there are any features which would justify the price difference. (Since this is not a RPS 3D PDF thread, I will not highlight the new features here - but keep you eyes on the SCF forum for a release announcement next week.)

I am wondering: will the filesize of the obtained 3D PDF be in the same range of the native SU file?I had a look on their website and the OSG Composer looks handy as well. A bit like DeepExploration?

Yes, pretty much, i didn't notice significant size differences between the two files, at least with the trial version.

It looks that you obviously are trying out Sim lab 3D PDF on a Mac. If so is it working okay for you? I tried it on my MacBook Pro but it would not work. I have a feeling it could be a problem on my end but I am trying to get it sorted with Ashraf so time will tell.

Hi All
I have tried both 3dPdf offerings.
Both do pretty much the same but the Simlab 3D PDF handled large files better with the RenderPlus version failing to finish and crashing on the same file render.
The Simlab version also produced a cleaner line hide for a native SU mode.
The shaded mode in both was just so so for presentation.
The two versions were downloaded last week so best to check the latest to see what new and improved today.dtr

I just installed the trial version of Simlab 3DPDF.
Unfortunately, when clicking Plugins/3D PDF/Export, nothing happens.

Am I doing something wrong here?This should be all what you need to do, after that the plugin should ask you for the location of the PDF file.
If this is not working please send an email with basic information like the sketchup version, the OS version, and a small description of the error you are getting to support@simlab-soft.com
