I’m evaluating upgrading from 6.4pro to 7.1pro. I did the speed test and was amazed.
But I ‘m a little concerned or confused about components. The libraries have been moved to the 3d warehouse?
Can I simply move or copy my component files from 6 to 7.1?
I tried making a components directory in c:\program files\google\su components
I thought it would be a good idea to have my components in one spot, then when su8+ comes out, all I have to do is change the file location in windows>preferences>components to the above location.
Except this doesn’t work in 7.1 (I made the change in preferences, saved the default template, closed su7.1, restarted. No luck, SU still looks to C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 7\Components.
      What am I missing here?
I want to do the same with materials since the material library that comes with v7.1 is rather thin.
And also with all the great rubies I’ve collected from the generous authors.
I did this method with another cad package, made yearly upgrades really simple.
      Thanks Glenn

I copied what I wanted over from 6.x to 7.0; just choose your folder names carefully. I have notice that the warehouse is beginning to accumulate a lot of very good stuff, and probably be the way to go in the future.

          Hi Glenn,

What the component browser is looking for is actually two things. One is its own native, default folder and one is the folder you create in your Preferences and where you then save your components from the folder when you are creating a local collection or such from your "In model" components.

Best tactics however is to copy (or if you don't have much space left on your HD and don't intend to use SU 6 too much, move) your existing compőonet folders to the respective folder in SU 7.1

Fortunately the skm material format is compatible now between the two versions, but as honoluludesktop says, be careful not to end up with a bunch of duplicates or such.

          Gai...

Thanks for the responses, I played around last night and found copying to the 7.1 folder works.
HD space isn’t a concern, my laziness is….I would like to put components in one spot and not have to move them for every update. 💚

I still don’t understand why I can‘t create a folder in another location that will be a common location for all versions of SU?
            Thanks again,
            Glenn

              I have noticed this also.
It is certainly improving with time and has a lot of excellent models on offer.
