No, not backwards compatible. You can save a file as version 6 from the free version of Sketchup 7. So installing SU7 free next to SU6 Pro might be your best bet.

Do I need to go thru the same steps as outlined in this thread to install them side-by-side, or will the free version automatically do that once it sees I have "Pro 6" installed?

version 7 won't overide your version 6, so there is no need to do everything explained here. It gets installed into its own directory, and keeps itself separate from 6.
It might not import your keyboard shortcuts from 6 correctly though, if I recall correctly. Which is annoying.
