Cutaway problem with sketchup
-
hey guys.
i'm a first time poster here, and a reasonably beginner modeller using sketch up.
i'm a 17 year old student from Australia, and am studying visual communications and design as one of my high school subjects.
i have one problem with the program however, which i am struggling to find a solution for.
When i pan/zoom around the model, sometimes it will cut away large sections of the model, even the section that i am zooming into, making it very hard to do intricate details and even when i'm looking at the site plan of a building it will sometimes cut away something like half the roof of a building for no reason.
Is there any way that i can turn this off? i can get screenshots if you guys don't understand my noobish language lol.
thanks guys.

You seem to be suffering with the problem of clipping.
This can be caused by several reasons.
One of the main causes could be your graphics card. What card do you have. You can try turning of Hardware Acceleration in Window/Preferences/OpenGL Settings and see if that helps.
Other known causes are posted here:

It definitely sounds like the clipping issue. Check the help center article Dylan posted and if you cannot find a solution, maybe post a model where you are experiencing it.

Hi Gaieus,
i have a model from Autocad which is fare away from the point of origin. I tried the method described at the link above.
then type "[0,0,0]" (including the square brackets) in the "Value Control Box"
But when i insert the last square bracket in the "Value Control Box" the input disappears and the lenghts shown before appears again. What do i wrong?

I presume that you have a European keyboard layout and when typing the ] bracket, you need to use the Alt+Ctrl (or AltGr) keys. If so, with the Move tool, it will tell SU to make a copy and it clears everything.
Conclusion; we cannot use this function (not to speak about the fact that you should use semicolons ; instead of the commas , here which - to me at lest - gives the same problem).
I have notified Google about this so many times...

Gaieus,
thankyou very much for your expert answer. In the hope that this issue will be eventually resolved. I have tried manually to move the model with some diffficulties. but now i got it at the origin point.

Well, I started using SU more than 3 years ago, when SU 5 "Beta" was first made free by Google after acquiring the software. I have been struggling with and complaining abut this ever since.
But sigh... In fact, with an extra step,it can be solved...
