Universal 3D and SKP

Hi All,
I am working on a factory at the moment and am looking to import the 3D equipment models in to my SKP model. The company doing the equipment work in solid works and a format I hadn't heard of called universal 3D
I was wondering if any of you had come across this format before and can suggest a good work around to get the U3D files imported into SKP.

I use Deep exploration for those extensions, it does a great job converting from .u3d to .skp.

Sort of ironic to have a fairly obscure format names "Universal 3d"
If I ever develop a format, I will name it "Worldwide ThreeD Format" .wtf

Universal 3D (U3D) is an ECMA standard and nothing obscure.
MeshLab OS provides direct conversion of 3D meshes in e.g. the OBJ, 3DS, Collada format etc. to the U3D format which can be used for embedding in 3D PDFs by Adobe Acrobat Pro/Extended or Right Hemisphere Deep Exploration etc.

Which raises the question...ECMA?
Maybe I've never heard of it just because I live in the states. However, I've never heard the organization or the format mentioned in 3d World which comes from over the pond. Nor have I seen that format in either the 3d World cd's, which always come with a variety of models, or in any of the Dosch models I've bought (also a European company).

you surely know 3D PDFs, the 3D part embedded is based on U3D.

Not trying to start an argument or anything. I was simply trying to point out a bit of irony. The name, I think, would suggest that it's more widely known and used than it, in fact, is. If your point is that it otherwise and your support is that it's backed by Ecma and used in 3d PDF's I'm not sure I'd still consider that much evidence. Whoever Ecma is doesn't seem to be doing much of a job of standardizing the format if it's unheard of even in European 3d trade magazines. And 3d PDF's are far from popular or well used. If it were "universal" you'd think that it would be supported by some of the common 3d software (3ds Max, C4D, Modo, Blender, SU, etc.).
I'm not trying to disparage the format. It may very well be the best thing since sliced bread (Edit: actually that slot has been filled by collada I guess). It's just a bit like walking down the street in Flatville, IL and seeing a restaurant named "Bill's World Famous Pizza" or "Ray's International Thimble Shop."

The thing is the format, while relatively new, is used by some of the biggest 3d users in the world. I'm not talking about 3d visualization as is common here. I'm talking about Boeing, Siemens, Intel and the likes for sharing their huge amounts of 3d data.
