I have just read that a new massive online game of Monopoly starts tomorrow. And I believe that users can design its own buildings in Sketchup!

From SketchUp, choose "Share Model" and upload your 3D building to the Google 3D Warehouse (you must have a Google account to sign in).

In the upload window, add the tag "monopolycompetition09" and make sure that you've checked "Allow 3D Warehouse users to contact me about this model" so we can contact you if you win!

Technical Guidelines:

· Buildings can be any size and any shape
· Buildings must not have photo-textures; they must be painted with solid colors
· The file size limit is 2 MB
· The file format should be .SKP

Key dates to remember:

Sunday 27 September 2009 midnight EST - Competition closes

Wednesday 30 September 2009 midnight EST - Our jury will select 3 building designs from the top rated designs and notify the winners. We will also need to verify eligibility requirements at this stage

Tuesday 6 October 2009 midnight EST - Winners will be announced

LOL, sounds like the people behind this venture have calculated designer's fees on a similar basis to many architects' clients: "Uhhh...say what? You actually want to be paid monetarily for the hundreds of hours' work involved in designing and executing our building?....... but surely just seeing your creation built is payment enough?"

Stuff like this really gets me mad. I've said all this before but the campaign site NO Spec explains very clearly why nobody should waste their energy on design competitions like this. Anybody thinking "this is great for my cv" could spend the same time better doing some unpaid work experience in a studio.

The thing that gets me is no photo-textures allowed - only solid colors! Good luck making a cool model that way, but I suppose the whole thing is geared towards schoolkids - but then why only offer a Sketchup Pro license?? Whatever their reasoning, the game is getting an overwhelming response...

Never heard of No Spec until now, great to see an organization at least attempting to create some unity amongst designers on this issue.

But don't school kids have access to Pro anyway because of educational licensing in school? I don't think this is really aimed at school kids, I'm sure they want the best models available for the game content.

Photoreal textures aren't a requirement to make a nice model. A model with just colour can be more effective than a textured as it had less visual noise.

I've posted about our app before, but if you want to see the Monopoly Competition buildings that are in Google Earth (KMZ) format on your iPhone, you can do so with NaviCAD (http://www.navicad.com). Just type in "monopolycompetition09" in the search interface and tap a result. The competition models look very good in NaviCAD.

Note that NaviCAD is only a viewing/navigating app. Any suggestions are welcome--send an email to feedback@navicad.com.
