Is this another scam site?
-
Hi guys
My constant search for a free/cheap photoshop alternative has probably made me register on a couple of forums, that make me a target for spam mails, with scam sites offering cheap OEM software.
This site is the latest(http://antivirusoftwaretry.com/) I can't be 100% sure that this one is a scam, but it made me wonder: Is there any chance that there actually are legal sites offering cheap OEM software?
Do you guys know any?

Quite possibly, but i imagine its very hard to filter out anything thats genuine from amongst the great swathes of fake crap.
Probably the best thing is to look for open source alternatives: GIMP instead of photoshop, openoffice instead of microsoft office etc.

I would be skeptical at best, that site and the pricing is not believable, IMO. A quick look at the FAQ also makes me question it's legitimacy:

You can take the software for downloading only! You don't have to pay for frilly package, license and printing user manual, which altogether makes up the majority of the total value. But, unfortunately, in this case you cannot get a technical support and different additional discounts from the producer. Also you can take updates which are available for the majority of our products. Finally, you will not pay for the delivery.
Really? The manual costs that much?

Do you send the CD with software?
It is impossible; we will not delivery software on a disk.I'm suspicious of sites that do not use proper grammar (if the whole thing is sending the wrong signals to begin with). The FAQ alone is full of errors. I suspect that this site sells warez, may I suggest you not give them any money. If I thought that this site was real and legit, I'd be all over it.

Do your offer the latest releases?
Not all versions of the software that we sell are the latest releases. To clarify this issue, you need to contact the manufacturer. And what version will you be getting if you do take a chance an buy?
If it looks too good to be true, it likely is.

Just a very quick "test" for the site. If you check their domain, it will give this IP which (if you check again where the hell it can be) will get this result:
http://www.geoiptool.com/en/?IP=173.45.115.10 (i.e NOTHING)Note that I've been using this nifty website to "locate" IP's (ehm... I can say "it's my job" here - also preventing spamming) but I have never seen it fail. It does now.
However, when you proceed to check out of the store, at least you are directed to a secure site (https). The lack of this is usually the very first and alarming signal of scamming.

thank you guys, and yes escapeartist - you nailed it. These are the error I look for as well. That and when there isn't any contact info, except a hotmail account or something
I guess the old saying is true. If it seems to good to be true - it probably is!
I'm tested most alternatives out there, and I think both Open Office and Gimp are really good products, but I much prefer Softmaker Office to Open Office, and I´'m still looking for something that can replace photoshop and Illustrater, while suiting my wallet and workflow preferences. After all, I'm graduating within a year, and then photoshop and illustrator aren't a given anymore.
I don't want to sound like I'm promoting anything, but I find Softmaker Office much faster than Open Office and you can customize pretty much anything. And if you download the older free version (2006), you get an upgrade offer, that will give you an office suite for under 20USD. Xara is another great alternative, but it's a bit more expensive, and I think I'm going to test Paint Shop Pro X2 next. Either that or Photo Plus X3. Have any of you tried these apps? -
Hi 2kemon,
i got the following when i clicked the link
Web Of Trust is an addon for Firefox which is really handy to establish trustworthiness of these sites in particular

Neat FF plugin rclub24, I'll give it a try too.
Sorry Gaieus, I haven't tried any of those. I pretty muck stick with SU, GIMP and Inkscape.
EDIT: Gave the plugin a try - the ratings are a bit arbitrary for my tastes. Uninstalled.

Google finds two results for antivirusoftwaretry. It claims to be cnet certified, but it is not and so... scam or pirated software.

Look at paint.net too. http://www.getpaint.net
