About groups, components and intersection (again)
-
Hello again!
Apart from reducing file size, what´s the advantage of keeping objects as components or groups inside a model?
I understand that in that case editing one component means editing all of them at the same time, which is quite time saving. I assume that it applies to animating them as well, but I haven´t tried it yet.
I dont´t really know if I should leave it that way or explode a model before exporting.
Quite often exploding it means some intersecting between components as well, which is another problem. I also don´t know if my model should be a hollow shell, or it could contain some overlapping parts ( like in some pre-drawn SketchUp components )
Thanks! -
One of the major advantages of using groups and components is in fact that they separate geometry so they don't "intersect" (or interact or become "sticky"). Where are you exporting them which would need exploding?
-
Sorry, "saving" would be more appropriate.
It is not much of a dilemma in case where they don´t interact with each other, but it confuses me when they do - picture a holder that protrudes into a satellite dish, for example.
A part that is inside is good for nothing, so it could be deleted. Or not? -
"Could" be deleted but the question is; should it be deleted (if it doesn't bother you) or is it worth deleting it (in case of a bunch of component instances where only one of those instances "poke through" some other geometry).
There is always the question of balance between "perfectionism" and "economical modelling" and you should find the answer and the solution most probably on an individual basis most of the times.

Thanks for the reply.
"Poking through" is just what I had in mind.
No, it doesn´t bother me that much, I guess I am just unnecessarily preoccupied with excessive geometry.
Removing such parts already gave me headache, because it led to "shrinking" of curved surfaces, which is something I have already bothered you with.
As for "exporting" models - I was actually thinking of "importing" them into 3DRad or Esperient Creator, hoping that I could make some kind of interactive application out of them. -
Hm. I don't know those apps but they sound interesting. Anything that is more interactive than a video file is interesting nowadays.
