Grass + Sketch Up + VRay
-
Hello it's me again, I have some questions (again). I am currently working on a exterior scene that requires me to show a lot of grass material, my grass is flat as you can see, is there a way I could do to improve the "grass look". Thank you, and last thing is there a plugin for 3d vegetation for sketchup? (e.g. onix tree for max and the likes)? Many thanks

Hi Edmon,
Here is a gras component (png file with transparency channel) posted:
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=8104&p=47713Now for SU, this works just fine (don't forget to turn off casting shadows for the component however). In some rendering engines png transparency also works (I'm not sure about V-ray but as far as I know, it doesn't). However if you follow the link in my post to the Kerkythea forums, you can download Kwistenbiebel's clipmap which (I'm sure) you can then use in V-ray.
Now maybe my component is not the best ever grass material either in SU or a PR renderer but at least you can see the "concept" how to create realistic looking, "3D" (in fact, just 2D) grass.

Hello Gaieus thank you for the link, i will try that, then I'll get back to you, thanks again.

Hello Gaieus, I have downloaded the grass, I am still finding ways on how to use them with v ray though, the grass material is there and so does the face when I render. I am still figuring this out.

You'll need to apply a separate clipmap in V-ray as Alan is explaining it here. Good news that in the Kerkythea topic I linked, you can download the diffuse and clip maps Kwistenbiebel shared so you don't need to crate them.

that grass looks super awesome. I have no idea how to use it in my models...ive never heard of the terms "clip" and "diffuse" maps used in this context. Regardless that grass looks very realistic nice work.

Well, in SU (as well as in a bunch or rendering apps that recognise transparency channel in PNG files), you don't need to bother with these maps at all.
- a diffuse map is (very basically) the simple, colour image you also use as a texture in SU.
- a clip map is a black and white version of the image where black tells the rendering engine to act as if there wasn't anything there (i.e. like transparency) while the white part will be rendered. It will "cut" or "clip" the image there, thus the name.

So I dont need to use those clip and diffuse maps to get that nice grass effect? I tried just applying it like any other texture but it doesn't look like the screen shot at all. It just looks like any other grass texture.

That grass s not only the texture itself but a component already bearing the texture. You should use the component itself to populate your model with its multiple instances. You'd better put it on a separate layer however and turn that layer off while you're modelling (and only turn it on when exporting an image or animation) otherwise your video card may die.
