Styles no longer saving in individual scenes

I am trying to create multiple scene views of a model, which includes one scene in x-ray view.
When I apply the x-ray style to the view and update the scene data for that view, the x-ray style is applied to the other scenes as well and vice-versa.
This used to work fine in version 6.
Any suggestions to solve this gratefully received.

In Preferences > General, at the bottom, there is a checkbox to "warn of style changes when creating scenes". If that is checked, a dialog pops up every time you change the style (and X-ray is a style setting) where for the next scene you can save it as a new style (and not ovrride what is being currently used).
