There's a fairly diverse group here so I thought I'd ask the following.

I have a water colour by Henry Stannard R.A. (1844-1920). It was left to me by a great aunt whom I never met. As much as I like the painting, I'm thinking that it ought to be in the hands of someone who might display it for others to see. I figure that someone is more likely to be in the UK than here in the US. The problem is, I haven't any contacts in that realm. Could anyone offer suggestions?

Just for fun, I attach some photos I just took of the painting.

        Hi, Dave:
That looks like a very nice painting. I assume you have done research on it and you know its value, now consider insuring it.

Actually, insuring it is on the list. I'm trying to figure out what sort of value it has. It isn't in perfect condition--there are some stains on it but they've been there since before I was given the painting. So far I haven't found any good sources for valuation. I've found a couple of auction houses in the UK that list other paintings by the artist or his kin but to find out what those paintings sold for, you have to subscribe to their service.

            Thank you Alan.

            I'll check it out.

I think you're probably looking at at least 5 grand, Dave. It might be an idea to contact Christies in NY, or a good auction house nearer home. Ther link below is likely to be Henry Stannard's grandson. I'd expect the senior to be worth even more.

Edit: Strike that. The older Stannard seems to be much cheaper.
