Transparent images with sketchy styles
-
My model is done with a sketchy brush style (so the edges vary in width). A partially transparent image needs to be in the center of a scene. I convert the image to a PNG and drag the image in and put it in place. However, a big problem happens ...
If Transparency is enabled, then all of the image is transparent (even what should be solid color). If Transparency is disabled, then the parts of the image that are transparent do not allow the brush style edges to show through (and I end up with a weird halo around the image).
Is there any way to import an image that is transparent for style edges?

This has been a bug since sketchy styles were initiated in SU 6 some more than two years ago. It hasn't been solved ever since.
Sketchy edges "bleed through" transparent png's.

Oh, gorsh, bad news. Is there any workaround? -- Joel

Not really. If you know Tom (tomsdesk) here in the forums with his beautiful NPR trees which would perfectly match sketchy styles, well, he's been going crazy because he'd have like a CD-ful of collections of those plants.
This was also one of the first things I checked when I could put my hand on a SU 7 version.

This is actually a commonly used technique - not even particularly to fix this bug but maily for 2D entourage to cast "proper" shadows (as you may have noticed, transparent png images still cast a rectangular shadow in SU).
At Smustard's, there is a plugin called "ImageProfile". It is free however the process is done on their servers and you need to purchase credits for processing your images.
Maybe a small fee is worth your (remaining) hair.

Hey - I just thought of something...
Instead of making the image transparent for sketchy edges, I could cut it away. I'd have to cut the image around the solid shape. Here's what I mean: I am putting images of 2D people into a 3D model. The area in the image that's around the person is transparent. The sketchy edges do not show through. How about if I cut away all the transparent areas?
Is there a way to follow the outline of an object in an image and cut around it? (A way that does not make me want to pull out my hair. And quick, too. I have lots of images.)
By the way, this is for a scene from the movie I'm making. I am creating a series of short movies using SU animation. You can see the first one, Plain Sight, at TreasureInside.net The next movie has a party scene with many images of people. --- Joel
