Exporting DWG files from SU Free
-
I have advised newer users many times that you can get a DXF or 3DS file from SketchUp Free by exporting the model in GE4 format, changing the file type from KMZ to ZIP, extracting the DAE file from the ZIP's Model folder, and then importing that DAE file into Blender, which can export DXF and 3DS.
I recently saw a post from, I was sure, Gaieus, about another product, also free, that could import SKP files directly and export DXF. 3DS was not mentioned in the post.
I spent the last 15 minutes poring over this site, trying to find combinations of search terms that would locate it, with no luck.
Turns out that it was indeed Gaieus who posted it, but on the Google Group, not here. The thread is
http://groups.google.com/group/SketchUp3d/browse_thread/thread/d3e627159ef5d571/4765be06e7d4a4e6
and the product in question is DoubleCADXT, free version, available at:
http://www.doublecad.com/Products/DoubleCADXT/tabid/1100/Default.aspxAnd, no, DoubleCADXT does not export 3DS files.
I hope this helps,

Double CAD is not only "just" a medium for further exports if you need a nice CAD software but it's a real CAD app, too, not only a toy. To say the least, I am a total beginner at CAD but slowly advancing to see what it's good for.
Thanks for bringing it up again, August, one can never emphasise good, useful (and of course, free) products enough!

All CAD progs are toys for beginning 20th people

Well, Pilou, CAD apps are for one kind of task and other (mainly modelling) programs are for different tasks. There are a whole bunch of things you cannot do with SU as it's not meant for drafting but modelling (and of course, vice versa).

OR:
SU > KMZ > rename ZIP > extract DAE > Blender > 3DS
(One less external app.) -

@Gaeius
Of course yes (maybe a little misunderstand Su is like CAD : Conception Assisted by Computer
I said all that didn't exist in the half less middle of the 20th century so it's all magic toys for me -
Is this for a different version of SU than #7? I cannot find a way select what version of GE to save the file as, only what version of SU I want to save it as.
-
In SU 6 (at least one subversion of it) there were two formats for GE: "simple" GE and GE 4. Now they are obsolete and SU only exports in one GE format (not to speak about that we are at GE version 5 now). It's a kmz file it exports.
-
Hmm, when I've tried renaming a .kmz to .zip and extracting it, I get a kml.doc - no directories.
-
The kml is simply the placemark (co-ordinates and such) for the GE model. There should be some further folders inside for the model file (*.dae) and the texture images.
