So caustics isn't the light effect you see in the images on that page?

Not sure what you mean, Thomas... 😕
What I say is that it's caustic I see in the render Eulgrand posted and not just light reflections...

I'm trying to work out what is the cautic effect in it. ...oooh... wait. is it in the shadow on the right side of the glass furthest in the back? Looking now it looks like some light in the middle of it. A very very faint effect?

Thomas... The ironi in your post doesn't really suit you... 😐
What is it you're trying to achieve with a post like that...???

But yes... Although it's not a very clear caustic, it sure is caustic...!

Sorry. That wasn't irony. I actually noticed it while I was typing up a question. I guess I should have edited the first bit. Didn't mean to come across as a jerk.

I think the reason why the caustics are that weak is because the scene is lit by HDR.
Sun light would definitely show more caustics imo.

I think you have it there. Multiple light sources seem to have washed them out. If the scene was rendered with those glasses in sunlight, I'm sure they'd throw some nice caustics.

Still an HDR studio (lazy me...) and sun (Soft shadows ON, radius = 1, Multiplier =1)

Here's another Maxwell rendering. Nothing special going on, this is simply the default glass material and water (default, meaning made through the Wizard via studio).

A lot of these renderings have been really great. I think for the next thread it would be interesting if there were more of a benchmark. Ideally, a real photograph along with the setup (light & camera positions as well as information like wattage, type of light, camera settings, etc.). It would be interesting, after having seen all of these examples, to get a better idea of accuracy as well.

I like the looseness of the challenge....it leaves a lot for interpretation. I do see your point about comparing apples to apples though.

I think a good one for the next challenge would be - Candle. I would be a good opportunity to see how render engines handle SSS in the wax and lighting tricks for the flame.

I think this is the best one yet, get a bit more light in to create heavier caustics and end this thread cos we have a winner! 👍

Very nice. I like the bubbles and water droplets you added to this one. The glass looks a bit too green in this one, but other than that, good job.
