Sketchup Quits Responding?
-
I have not seen the word 'Layers' used once here, you may want to try that first and see if you can hide everything except the mesh you are working on, maybe it will be faster.

The graphics drivers are the most likely culprit with SU. But it can also be worth to update your MB drivers as well.
If you found a way to upload your model some where we could test it and verify whether it's a local problem that happens on your computer, or a model problem. -
I have the latest Drivers from ATI for my video card (cat 9.3), not sure about mobo, will have to check asus site to make sure.
I have an older HP computer with XP and an Invidia 8600GT vid card installed, with an Athlon 4200+ dual core processor. I'm going to download SU 7 on it and draw up another grill & see how it acts on that machine, and go from there.
-
I just loaded SU7 onto my HP machine, & drew up another fan grill. The problems seem to be worse on that computer. As soon as I try to extrude to the proper thickness SU stops responding. its been a couple minutes now & its still not responding.
Would it help if i upload the grill with just the layout, not extruded, so you guys can try to extrude or figure out what is going on? Or should I just let it go and assume SU isnt powerful enough to do what I'm trying?

Yes please.

For some unknown reason I just cant upload this model, even if its not extruded, tried it on both machines. I did upload a Bulgin power switch that I drew up the other day & uploaded just fine took about 1 minute if that long, so that leads me to believe its the model itself!!
If I ever figure out how to get to upload I will let ya know.
Thanks for the help in trying to figure this out.

Do you know how to use FTP? I can PM you a password to a folder on my FTP if you want to put it there for a few days.

Don't know what "FTP" is, let alone how to use it. Appreciate the offer though.

Upload it here: http://www.rapidshare.com/
then share the download link in thread.

Now that works, I should have thought of this myself.
Here you go:

Yeah, unfortunately that is just too high poly count. The only thing you can do is to make it into a componnent and then move the component onto another layer that you keep turned off except when your exporting images or videos or something.
Otherwise you could remodel it with the circles having fewer line segments. Its so small of a part that it won't be that noticeable. Or you replace it with a an image that looks like it. I don't like that option presonally, but it might work out well in this instance.

Yup. That mesh has 42K faces. Each circle of 1mm has 24 sides.
AT what scale are you working? Will you ever be close up to the mesh? Macro style views? If not, you can get away with 6-8 sides for the circles. Or even just a texture. You will experience faster viewport if you turn of Profiles under the Edge section in the Styles window. Edge effects can slow down a model as much as shadows.

Scale is 1 to 1, won't really be close up, just want to be able to see through it.
Is there a way to change the circle tool to only draw at 6 ot 8 sides? or would I have to draw them by hand. changing the sides would definatly work if there is an option that I don't know about that changes the number of sides.
-
You can change the number of edges and arches before your extrude them by using the Entity Into window.
You can also set the number of sides when you draw circles and arches. Type "8s" in the VCB to make 8 sides, etc etc.
