How to simulate a carving in wood w/ SketchUp
-
I have a simple wood carving that I want to replicate in SketchUp and I’m looking for thoughts or examples on how best to accomplish it. The attached pattern is what I would use as an overlay on an actual piece of wood and then do a simple carving along the lines with a V-gouge, no more than 1/8” deep. Thanks for your help. Ron

Well, here is a long and fine tutorial about some wood carving methods (although the pattern is different there of course): http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?p=62185#p62185
Your pattern should also be easy to do with the proper V shape profile and the Follow me tool however be aware that SU has problems with very tiny dimensions and if your carving profile would be somewhere at 1/8" deep, many of the faces created (around curves for instance) would have even smaller edges and SU wouldn't be able to create these faces.
The solution is to model everything much bigger (say 10 X or even 100 X bigger) and when you are done, scale the whole thing back accordingly.

Thanks for your help. Here's what I was able to accomplish using V shapes and follow-me tool. It ended up looking exactly like the original antique that I was reproducing.
