Uniform scale
-
Not sure if this has been asked before (couldn't find anything):
Every time I use Uniform Scale about Center on an object, I'm forced to keep CTRL pressed (as it should be, right?), but am unable to enter a specific value (say 0.75). Is it possible to use a uniform scale without keeping CTRL pressed?
Cheers
edit: this topic can be closed, I just found the answer in the form of a ruby scaling script

You can do it natively as well, although it isnt particularly intuitive.
Basically you do a scale about the centre point (anything will do), then after youve clicked to finish it you enter your value in the measurements box and press enter.

Yeah, what Remus says. Sometimes you think that using the mod keys will prevent you from entering precise values (well, sometimes it does but not in this case). Don't forget however that you can generally use the VCB/Measurement Box input right after the operation as well.
The same goes with the Shift key. This would allow you to scale uniformly with the side grips (or non uniformly with the corner grips). You cannot however type feet while holding the shift key (at least on a US keyboard) because it will type inches instead.
The solution again is to release the scale tool after you started the scale operation (it will seem to have finished it) and immediately after that type what you need to then press Enter.
BTW I almost never use the corner grips as the side grips - combined with the Shift key - give much more control over scaling; one great thing for instance is that you can easily snap to edges with it while not with the corner grips.
As for plugins; yes, they definitely are great nevertheless the best strategy (especially for a beginner) always is to learn to model everything (that's possible) with native SU tools and use the plugins to speed up your workflow but only after you understand what they are doing instead of you doing the same (just with laborious work).
A couple of times I had to sit down to computers where certain plugins I regularly use were not installed yet I had to solve the problem without them, too. Most I could do in most cases was to tell them that what I was doing tediously, could be speeded (sped?) up with certain plugins.

I ALWAYS forget this. I tend to use the corner grips a lot and complain that I can't snap - oops! Thanks for the reminder,
Chris

But as an "exchange" for this convenience, sometimes you have to scale something in more than one step. Still worth the effort.
