Component editing and use as subtraction method
-
Well, I predicted that once I started posting, I would not stop. That's another chunk out of my day.
I have a couple of questions that are probably elementary, but I cannot seem to find in my searches.-
What are the steps to add stuff to an already existing component? Like I made a component yesterday. Today, I want to add some additional entities--lines, faces--to it. Or even delete same to modify the component? All of this done in the model view.
-
I thought there was a method of subtraction using components, or is that groups, where you select two or more components, that are physically intersecting or overlapping each other, then perform an intersect operation(with model? or with selected?) and delete the common elements. And the common elements can be removed in one click, say as a group, or a resultant component. For example, to punch a hole in a complex form such as an organically modeled shell that needs a big window opening in it. In one click, the lines and faces filling the hole are deleted.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

the easiest way to do this is to cut the geometry you want to add to the component to the clipboard, go in to the component, edit>paste in place. the other method that comes to mind is first exploding your component then selecting all your geometry and regrouping it.
-
Sounds like your referring t the intersect tool. Basically all you do is select te geometry you want to intersect>right click>intersect>with selected. Its important to note that any geometry is created in the current context i.e. if you select 2 groups and intersect them the intersection lines will be outside both groups.

Forgot to say, whaat has produced a rather goor boolean script that basically does 2. for you, i think it's about $10. Well worth it if your going to use SU a lot, though. http://www.smustard.com/script/BoolTools

Thanks, Remus:
It has never occurred to me to use the windows cut copy paste tools as part of SU.
Obviously, this has been a part of the program since its early versions. I need to get into the habit of using the keyboard more, which I would prefer if there were quickkeys for some of the input and editing tools other than line, move, select, etc.
I viewed the clip on BoolTools and I believe that this is a script worth having.
Thank you for that link and your early reply.

You can setup your own shortcuts for most things by going window>preferences>shortcuts

Thanks again Remus.
If I had been paying attention, I would have seen the "core an apple" post by Halkun that sort of talks about my issue and Gaieus suggested the same tool.
Thanks again.

It's very good, guys, that you keep an eye on each others' posts already at a beginner level since sometimes one doesn't even know what to ask or if there are other things you can do but never encounered yet.
I've learnt a lot at forums similar to thisone (and keep learning ever since as a matter of fact).

To Gaieus and anybody else.
If there is one thing I have learned over the thirty years since college graduation, it is that you never stop learning.
Another thing I have learned is that there is always someone out there somewhere who has more knowledge than me or is smarter than me and since computers and forums have come into existence these sources of knowledge and wisdom can be accessed for answers or ways to find answers. You guys are part of the source.
Thank you for that.
