Bonzai 3D First Impressions
-
personally i think $500 dollars i pretty affordable, especially considering the small market theyre aiming at.
I suppose it depends a lot on where you live, though. $500 in the UK isnt a huge amount, $500 in many other countries is a huge amount of money.

Was there any promise that it's be the same price as Silo or ac3d. "priced low" is a relative term. Depends on your point of view. Silo is extremely cheap. Being one of the rare. There's a difference between "priced low" and "priced lowest". I really do think its fair to claim that they have been dishonest.

To be fair to sketchup, the subject was quite biased towards MoI, i.e. lots of boolean operations were involved.
</SU defense>

Now that I remember... there's also MoI.
-
It's $200
-
Exports SketchUp format
-
Clean interface - you can actually figure out how to do stuff, and there was once this little "contest" in the MoI forum of SketchUp vs MoI. It was about which app could model a shape in less seconds. MoI won.

Uses the same file format as Rhino, the hottest NURBS modeler today. So if you end up working for a company that uses Rhino, It's a lot easier to convince them to buy a copy of MoI than of Bonzai3D, both because of cost and because of compatibility. Actually, of my former College friends, about half use ArchiCAD; one or two have tried SketchUp but rarely use it, and three of them work with Rhino on a daily basis. None uses Form-Z.
So...
EDIT: I've just noticed that thomthom has just mentioned MoI, too. I should have read his posts more carefully.

I find the whole thread to be out of place and a waste of space. The fact that other modeling companies feel they need to trespass here to promote is the first sign of their weakness.
Sketchup has a huge audience. Lets face it, good or bad, there isn't any other surface modeler that works so well and is available to so many. There never will be.
If you think you can come here and convert 1000's of SU users you are fooling yourself, it is too late for that. Where were you 6 years ago??? No original thought then, no original thought now.

Gheesh. So much negativity. Since SU is a mesh modeller and Bonzai NURBS modeller I find to be like comparing oranges to apples.
I find Bonzai to be a very interesting application and I'm happy that I was informed about it here. I'm also happy that they come and answers questions over at this forum so I don't have to sign up at theirs.
I don't see Bonzai as replacing SU, I see it as another weapon in the arsenal. -

Why not encourage a new one? Bite thy thumb at them!

Damned! It was me the challenger for Su against Moi!
It was just because Michael Gibson ask me : in how many time could you make this?
For the the fun I had accepted and said something like "in a very short time"
You can see the fight here
Begin slowly post 1 to the end http://moi3d.com/forum/messages.php?webtag=MOI&msg=1978.1
One guy has made 22 seconds (with Moi)
Try to do it, but you must have a little training I believe that I made 35 - 40 second with SU
Booelan plug did'nt exist at this date maybe that change something now? (and Michael wanted that I didn't use many plug)
So I had just used Mirror
Maybe you can find another method than mine
Have fun! But carreful that is very bad for the blood pressure! -
Fast model building....wow, I'm impressed. Can anyone show some Bonzai models in production? Where is the money? or is it just a toy? I see SU earning money everyday. I'd like to see where the potential is for this app. Not hypothetical, real. I would be more inclined to use it if it was a money maker. For the sake of hobby, yes fast modeling is a game we can play. Tell me guys, where is the meat?
First attempt at the model above with SU, 18 seconds, at a leasurely pace. I don't get it??

I agree. This thread has been taken way off-topic, and I don't think it belongs here.

Here is one for you to try out. This matching couch and chair took 44 seconds to build with SU.
-
Id much prefer they come and offer support rather than leaving people to flounder around trying to work things out for themselves.
Hebrides, if you can be bothered (its quite a hassle, i know) id love to see a screen capture of you modelling the moi challenge. I had a quick go and got around 1 min, and i consider myself a reasonably proficient with SU.
-
Well yes it is a bit of a job...I can understand your wanting to confirm this time. You will just have to take my word for it. I have been using SU from the beginning, 6 to 8 hours everyday, thankfully weekends off. That would put my time in SU just over 10,000 hours. Believe me, once you have that many hours under your belt the whole process becomes a reflex. It is also about shortcuts. One hand on the keys and one hand on the work. It is just like playing an instrument, after hours of practice it becomes an extention of your thinking.
-
So you are fine for the other above!
40 second to fight!( SU), (22 second Moi) Good luck!
Mine is possible because I am not Paganini Moi's will be more difficult! -

What a pity that a SU genius like yourself cannot master a simple screen capture software. How lucky we are though that you can tell us how great you are.

I must say that made me laugh pretty hard...a few of my colleagues here just about messed their pants.

Why not? Plugins are deliberately made possible in (and part of) SU therefore they belong to it. You can put it this way; that's SU's strength over many modellers. If you want to compare modellers, compare them in their full capacities - including plugins.
It's like comparing a sail boat to a steamboat - "but you cannot use coal for the steamboat" (because it's not part of it in the shop).
Anyway, as you say, BoolTools didn't exist then so this is just theoretical.
(Sorry for the OT post)
-
@Gaieus: Prog by default in early version for equilibrate possibilities
But sure plugins must be integrated with any restriction! -
I understand that Michael himself built MoI in a modular way, right, Pilou?
I've seen in the MoI forum that he can easily add functionalities to it, just as Ruby Masters do with SU.
